• It has been confirmed that Spacebattles is filtering out links to The Sietch. Discussions with the owner of SB have indicated that they desire a clean break with us and feel that this is a means to that end. Out of respect for their desire for a clean break we request that our members refrain from violating this unwritten policy.

Hey everyone! As part of our recent initiative to improve the experience for the userbase and streamline the setup around here we have expanded our Alternate History section into multiple Sub-forums!

Now users have access to...
  1. Pre-1900 Timelines & Discussion
  2. Post-1900 Timelines & Discussion
  3. Alien Space Bats, Fantasy & Science Fiction
The first two categories were implemented on the basis of the AH.com model for the obvious benefit of convenience owning to the huge separation in the field of history between those who are more interested primarily in 'Modern Conflicts' such as larger industrial wars and modern politics, from those who may enjoy much more earlier conflicts of antiquity onward from the eras of swords to rifled muskets.

Meanwhile the third forum was made/moved to help iron out redundancy and confusion as to what defines a thead belonging to either the 'ASB', 'What If,' and "The War College" Sub-forums in an attempt to avoid a large amount of redundancy and confusing thread placement. For now, (And as of now) the bare bones examples of where things belong are...

  • "A Roman Legion Vs. A Greek Phalanx" is more of a question for the The War College because it features discussion primarily on the basics of tactics of two distinct historical armies and the same would apply to most historical figures with some exceptions.
  • "Optimus Prime Vs. Godzilla" is a clear Versus and What-Ifs question owning to the fact that neither creature/individual is historical outside popular culture.
  • "A Portal Between Earth 1940 and Earth 1914" or "Britain moved to the Eastern U.S. Seaboard in 1774" are both clear cut examples of an Alien Space Bats, Fantasy & Science Fiction scenario as both are clear examples of historic societies of different periods or historical interactions based on cause an effect both initiated via an out of scientific context method and based primarily around history discussion as a whole.
  • "WW2 Vs. Modern U.S.A" is another discussion for The War College as it's again more about tactics or two armies fighting each other over historic nuance, although I can see why some would think it could be a 'Vs'. or 'What If' however if the question is phrased to be more of a question of how politically and culturally, they interact or what both thinks of the other, it goes to ASB.
Those are some clear examples I can give for reference. Note however, that the staff is like I stated before still ironing out some bugs with our new system specifically in regard to more mixed examples like.
  • "Teddy Roosevelt (1900) Vs Vladmir Putin (2010) Isn't a question that's tactical or military minded enough for 'The War College' is too historical for 'Vs. and What-if's' and not something I think that needs to be repeatedly cluttering up ASB... (Perhaps a Thread for "Frivolous Vs. of Historic Figures" in ASB is needed to keep future clutter to a minimal?)
  • "What if: Optimus Prime Emerges from a Portal at the Battle of Gettysburg and aids the Union?" Is probably the biggest type of question we will have trouble sorting as it's a definitive mix of all categories, it's a 'What If' with a clear sci-fi character but coupled with a historic battle and historical discussion of ramifications as well as interactions in its aftermath, although I think on this example The War College is out of the running as it's less of a matter of tactics and more a matter of historical/sci-fi discussion.
If anybody has more questions or suggestion of how we should go about some of these minor hiccups, feel free, and please give us feedback on the new arrangements.

I'd suggest that if there's a fictional character or setting involved, it's more a thread for Versus & What-If. So things like Optimus Prime at Gerrysburg, or France suddenly moved to Westeros or whatnot.

To me, it also seems like TR versus Putin would also be Versus & What-If, because it's about the two of them duking it out, or just about comparing their abilities. (On the other head, "Putin's mind put in TR's body in 1900" would be a typical ASB premise, and would presumably focus on the ATL outcomes of that.)

Anyway, there's still a bunch of existing threads that are currently in (almost certainly) the wrong place. I've made a quick list, in an attempt to be helpful. If moving them presents way too much work, it's obviously not all that important, but since I went by thesem anyway, I figured I'd share the list here. Use or ignore as desired.

Honestly, splitting things up like this is making me less likely to bother trying to look through all of them than when everything was just in one forum. I don't really understand why there was a need for all these subforums.

Organization, to put it simply while having them all in one forum is doable at present as we grow as a site and the list of threads accumulated grow ever longer it will become much more of a hassle to identify and find TL's in a single huge subforum with no means of organizing them and believe me as a history fanatic WW2 buffs don't want to wade through hundreds of thread debating antiquity or vice versa to find their preferred eras of interest. Furthermore, if we waited longer on doing this the job would just be bigger down the road hence now.

We had a poll and discussion on this and a majority agreed it needed to be done and those that disagreed only did so on the grounds of them thinking the forum might have been too small for the move.

A lot of people on here are refugees from AH, that was the way that place was organized, and that was one of its few good points.

There is a world of difference between George Washington receiving his commission in the British Army and a ROB giving Genghis Khan a million AK-47s, one is a plausible alternative, the other is a ROB.

For AH types it is like comparing something in the War Room to a random ROB scenario.

I'm pretty sure XenoForo can have all the subforum contents appear in the parent forum instead of it being empty. I think that's how SB used to handle Worm.
