The Americas Mexico is breaking diplomatic ties with Ecuador after police stormed the embassy in Quito

In short, the Ecuadorian police just broke into the Mexican embassy in the country since the Mexican government gave asylum to a corrupt ex-VP that escaped jail after being charged for corruption and sought asylum in the embassy- which was granted for some reason.

This is unprecedented.

Ecuador's Embassy safely held Julian Assange in Britain for like seven years until permissions was given to the British to take him. Seeing this take place has a fair bit of a irony.

Apparently the man in the video the police are pushing down to the ground for attempting to interfere is the Mexican Ambassador or Consular Head, Roberto Canseco.

Obviously Mexico shouldn't be providing asylum to convicted criminals but raiding an embassy is a dramatic escalation.

Things fall apart
The center cannot hold.

Hmmm apparently Mexican Foreign Policy has been suffering in recent weeks thanks to Mexican President Obrador's criticism of other more conservative governments and Mexican Ambassadors have been expelled from other Latin American countries such as Bolivia and Peru.

(This is from an article prior to the raid explaining things)

And I think it might've been discussed here, perhaps not, but Ecuador has also had an alarming rise of drug violence and part of it is due to Mexican Cartels allegedly working with Ecuadorean gangs in Ecuador and President Lopez of Mexico isn't doing anything about it. Plus he was critical of Ecuadorean President Noboa's election since he beat out Lopez' Socialist pal Correa in the elections. And Ecuador President Noboa has vowed to tackle the gang violence.

This former Vice President, Jorge Glas, is a close political ally of the ex-President Correa and friends or at least politically allied to Lopez and the Mexican Socialists. So there might've been a motivation to the Mexican Embassy offering him asylum.

Noboa for his part, seems like a Big Tent/Populist Centrist or Center-Left Liberal type. Which is still more conservative then Lopez or Correa.

Yeah it's mostly exceptional because eup to this point only Iran has made a habit of intentionally striking embassies and consular buildings.

US did it due to incompetence in 1999 and Israel struck a residence recently adjacent to some Iranian Consular building )which seems like splitting hairs to some).

Ecuador seems to be willing to take the hit to international standing and doesn't care about having a diplomatic relationship with Mexico or anyone who might be strongly supporting Mexico in this incident.

If you look at the list of acts of aggression against diplomatic facilities it's almost mostly Middle Eastern stuff or political terrorists targeting diplomatic facilities located in Latin America.

They'll restore full diplomatic relations between Mexico & Ecuador once this blows over.

Fuck Lopez Obrador since he's term limited this year.

While this is a dramatic escalation, Ecuador has been cracking down hard on the Cartels and arresting (or killing if they fight back) tens of thousands of suspected criminals.

It's probably a big PR win (for their own population) for the current Ecuadorian Administration, something along the lines of getting criminals no matter where they are.
