Rest In Peace Lindsay Ellis, Nostalgia Chick/YouTuber (2008-2021)

I'm not terribly familiar with her work since I never watched that whole Nostalgia... Thing back in the day but apparently she got cancelled by her own hardcore fanbase after making a horrifically racist anti-Asian tweet back in the Spring that she later deleted.

I couldn't find the Tweet as a consequence but she made this tweet explaining her POV for making such a racist smear against Asians

Wait... That is the tweet that got her cancelled?

*Squints*

What? Cuz they're both Asian? It's obvious she's talking about the formation and team composition and-

Well anyways recently she decided to cancel herself off of social media including her home on YouTube, citing harassment in a post to her Patreon.

Again I'm unfamiliar with her but the verdict seems to be that she made her own bed and is now laying in it. Having watched like ten minutes of her ALMOST TWO HOUR EXPLANATION VIDEO on being cancelled that she posted last Summer I could readily see why the schadenfreude exists.

Anyways rest in peace. Enjoy writing words on paper or whatever it is your going to do now. LYgma is a terrible way to go. 😭 💀 🥜

Apparently because they both use Polynesian culture, and saying that they look the same is saying that all Polynesian cultures are the same. ...Except I don't remember any Polynesian stuff in Avatar, and Avatar uses at least four different Asian cultures for inspiration (Thai-Fire, Tibbetan-Wind, Chinese-Earth, Siberian-Water). Eh, no one ever accused them of being rational.

Lindsay Ellis was tremendously influential in taking the world of online reviewing away from "Guy randomly screams about how terrible things are at his camera" to people looking and critiquing structure, plot, and the general craft of writing and design. It's a shame to lose her.

But yeah, she rather legendarily participated in a ton of canceling of others so this really is her own behavior coming back to bite her. It really helps to realize how toxic cancel culture actually is though, she had over a million followers and something ridiculous like 9,000 patrons, she said all the right things and did all the work to portray herself as morally just and part of the Twitter elite participating in canceling those who were "problematic" and her entire media empire was sunk by a single tweet that requires actual effort and a lot of tortured logic to even find anything harmful in it.

Hello, and welcome to episode 4692 of "Notable person who enthousiastically participated in holier-than-thou purity politics finds out, too late, that standing in a forest fire will still kill you even when you helped to fan it in the first place"

This is basically the J.K. Rowling thing, writ small.

I'll stop laughing once they stop deliberately starting the fires that end up burning them.

Yeah I don't feel any real compassion for this one. Especially since it's literally not even her entire fanbase. She didn't really lose any subs on her youtube over this. This whole drama is literally her freaking out that a FEW of her 'fans' are doing the normal down with the evil racist thing.

She could literally ignore this. And it wouldn't impact her work any further. That's how stupid this is.

That's a good point. I'm reasonably sure the likes of Seth Rogan gets more hate than she has, and he's still online.

I'm mildly hopeful this incident will be shocking enough to get some efforts started against cancel culture. It's probably not enough but if somebody can actually equate it will cyber-bullying it could get legal measures going.

Having gone over events a bit more, I'm amused that, having been savaged by Twitter's assortment of progressives, she's decided that it was... all the fault of cis white men.

But all I know now is that being in the public eye at all is a losing game, and I regret all of it. I regret every time I’ve ever stood up for anyone – it always backfires. I regret every time I pushed back against something unjust – it was always just used to hurt me. I regret every time I ever stood up for myself – I never did it “correctly.” I regret every time I showed any vulnerability – just more ammunition to be used against me later. I regret every time I ever tried to play the game with peers and colleagues – they will drop you the second you aren’t popular on Twitter anymore. It’s all hollow and brittle, and if there is one thing I have learned this year it is how eminently expendable I am. The good, progressive cis, straight, wealthy white men keep on trucking and coming out on top because deep down, they know that the systems they profess to stand against ultimately exist to benefit them.

Like I said I have ZERO sympathy. This entire situation is her own doing, and that all her twitter followers are attacking her is somehow the white mans fault only makes her inability to understand how pathetic this entire drama is all the more disappointing.

She is ruining a career she spent at least a decade working on because people are complaining about one tweet that doesn't even say what they think it says.

honestly seeing the whole character of people like Lindsay, Linkara, Lupa, it really has made me question the whole #changethechannel debacle. Despite his flaws Doug, and those who stood by him have really come across as the bigger men. Meanwhile everyone except for Phelous that was involved in that changethechannel movement have really shown themselves to be rather petty, and unsavory it really makes you start to wonder if everything was less about fairness and more about ego. While I hopped on the bandwagon after the whole JewWario debacle I should have trusted my gut. It's easy to lay accusations at a man who's six feet in the grave.

This part is I think what I find the most pitiable. It's sad that her experience was apparently so awful that she can't even be proud of having made a stand for what she believed in and stood for, that even those memories and actions are tainted by this whole mess.

Can you imagine living your entire life and only thinking you did the right thing, or were pleased with what you had done, ONLY when everyone you ever interacted with told you, you were right? I take it back. That woman needs to get off the internet and discover who she is for a few years.

I think this is the fruits of being an influencer of her type. There is a reason why the bible says to not make show of your alms (and even do them in secret.) People's idea of right changes every few years. I agree with you. She needs to get away from being an influencer for a while and figure out where she stands.

I laugh.

She grew popular because she was genuinely attractive. But thats starting to fade. Her schtick is old and tired. Her takes predictable. And now the beast she helped to raise has turned on her.

She will learn nothing of course. This is religious fanaticism, and fanatics often respond to social cancelling by becoming more fundamentalist.

The best part is that Deplorables she helped cancel are actually more free in many ways. Despite having more pressure from the establishment, our social circles dont give a shit. Thats why our spaces are actually more free. If she was a Deplorable she might be less rich, but she would certainly be happier.

Sooner beans and water in freedom than cake and wine in fear.

She’s a total cunt and she’s getting just a tiny taste of her own medicine. She became famous for being a cute nerdy girl who’s kinda smart and talked in depth about geeky topics, nothing too special honestly. She has spend years calling people racist, sexists, and transphobic. She believes in destroying people’s lives - doxxing, canceling, and demonization - for imagined sins against the woke SJW cult.

Now she’s a whiny hypocritical bitch who acts like her is being persecuted because she’s receiving just a tiny bit of the toxicity that she has being dishing out for over a decade. She‘s a terrible person and deserves worse than some mean tweets by fanatics that she herself helped to radicalize.

Also, she killed her baby and glorified it.

Fuck her.

I like that she's keeping her Patreon going without publishing anymore, not for the money for herself, of course, but because she has employees who depend on her for health insurance so she needs that Patreon to keep them safe.
