You might recognize the name. You will definitely recognize his impact on the Comic Book Industry. I actually conflated him with the almost equally legendary Comic Book Writer Denny O'Neil but the truth is that the two of them teamed up and made Batman 'darker' as in saving him from the 'Camp' that was pervading his character thanks to the just as legendary Adam West TV series and a lot of the Golden Age Comic Books. He helped bring to life the infamous Batman villain Ras Al Ghul and made Two-Face and Joker serious villains again.

Alongside Roy Thomas, his colors saved the X-Men from an early death back in the late 60's. It didn't exactly launch the X-Men into being the forefront of Marvel (that would be later with the likes of Chris Claremont) but he did help establish them and continue to give them relevance to readers and maintain their interest.

He was also the artist of the iconic Avengers arc, the 'Kree-Skrull War' where Roy Thomas and he had the idea of Marvel Earth being the equivalent of a 'Pacific Island In World War Two' but laid out on a galactic scale with Earth and the Avengers caught in the middle of a War between two Spacefaring Superpowers, the Kree and the Skrulls.

Did I mention he also did the art for the famous comic where Superman boxed Muhammad Ali?

He was also famous for his work in Green Lantern and Roy Thomas' famous run on Conan the Barbarian. He became less prolific an artist for comics as the seventies carried on, but was still doing artwork for comic book covers and some interiors and other specials right until the end.

He passed away at the age of 80.

Oh yeah, he also helped make the Green Lantern John Stewart a thing as well.
