Yeah this has been happening for awhile now.
Nerd culture used to be very apolitical until left wing control freaks spent litteral decades acting like assholes which drove a lot of formerally neutral people into the right. This proccess will continue until society finally fucking snaps and turns upon them.

More than apolitical, it defaulted left-leaning, because of leftist culture's permissiveness towards indulgence and sexualization.
That would be more libertarian than left wing. The leftist culture absolutely does not accept certain kinds of indulgence and sexualization and promotes certain other kinds. Hence all the controversies and fandom fights about woke fandom products sucking in certain very specific ways.

Up until around 2010, maybe a bit later, 'sex negative' feminists and the like were a tiny fringe. You were more likely to find Democrat 'christians' being against hedonism than the current wokie types.
Further, up until a few years after that, libertarians (in America at least) overwhelmingly sided with the political left. Often they were very nearly one-trick ponies in favor of weed legalization and homosexual 'marriage,' and the general mood of that tiny political wing was more about pushing social permissiveness, over personal rights.
It wasn't really until the left realized that the right could use the internet too, and Trump Derangement Syndrome set in, pushing the left to suddenly start being aggressively censorious online, that more than a small number of the already tiny libertarian movement realized that their 'friends' weren't actually their 'friends.'
It really is hard to overstate what a sea-change the 2015 election was to the internet.
Leftist are cunning enough to play down their demands and even larp as liberals or libertarians when they feel weak and likely to be rebuked if they reveal their full agenda.
Libertarians, like many political, fandom and institutional communities, are under constant attempts at leftist infiltration and constant prodding towards becoming left's propaganda repeaters. Sometimes those achieve some degree of success and bring effects.
Not just online, it's more of a function of their self-confidence in ability to get away with more aggressive enforcement of own mores, for example it happened earlier in colleges, back in the day of some people going "nah, this will not get out of colleges". And US libertarians of all people tend to be quite naive about the political maneuvering of the progressives.
And let's not forget one of the biggest and most insidious attempt at infiltration and wordplay on part of leftists - the total capture and usurpation of the banner of liberalism in English language countries.

Unfortunately this isn't news, in fact it's been going on for a very long time. Anita Sarkeesian shut down Feminist Frequency last week, but their work was already done - almost 15 years since she started it up, pretty much every gaming company of significance in the West has DIE commissars, devs of a remotely conservative stripe have been canceled and forced out of the industry (FNAF's creator Scott Cawthon is a very noticeable recent case and that happened the instant his views become public knowledge, but you can look as far back as Bungie's top composer Martin O'Donnell or further still for examples of this), every female character has to be hit with the ugly stick and measured against TLOU2's Abby Armstrong as their #1 beauty standard for acceptability, all the black characters but especially the women tend to look like they walked right out of the set of a '70s blaxploitation movie, if white guys are in the game it's usually as villains or plot-irrelevant idiots (or both), every plot & setting is infused with woke intersectional BS, etc.
Sark and the woke horde she was a herald of did infinitely more damage to vidya than Jack Thompson could have dreamed of, frankly it will probably take years if not decades and at least one more 1983-esque crash for the video game industry to recover from what has been unleashed upon it. Knowing what we know now about BlackRock, Larry Fink and the ESG-backed propagation of intersectional ideology, I wouldn't even be surprised if it turns out she was a paid lackey of his this entire time and that FF was used as a wedge to ideologically capture the then-booming industry and force it to be ESG-compliant (in which case it makes even more sense that she'd shut FF down now, why would Fink keep donating to her & buying her views/subscribers when her job is complete?). Truly Gamergate was just the tip of an absolute leviathan of an iceberg.

I wouldn't say it is AS prevalent.
Sure some big name companies are but smaller ones arnt.
Owl games of the pathfinder game series, the creators of Buldars gate series are another example.

Different countries have different sensitivity to this kind of lobbying.
The most sensitive will die first, and at least some of the less sensitive will not only take over the freed up market share but perhaps even take a lesson from it.
Obviously the most sensitive are western market catering AAA segment, and it's far from their only self inflicted handicap so the die-off there is likely.
But on the other hands the AAA segment currently produces only a fraction of a percent of all games being released, which is an utterly ridiculous number, and could really use some fire under its ass to stop doing some long practiced stupid shit that it got away with due to having more money than sense for some time.
