Most of the headlines state how Joel Schumacher was the Director of the Batman films without clarifying that he was the director of the less laudable sequels to Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, especially since such films were considered just some of the worst.
I prefer to remember him for the much better films he directed, such as amazing low key drama and thriller Falling Down starring Michael Douglas in one of my favorite roles in one of my favorite movies period.
He also directed the criminal mystery film 8mm starring Nicholas Cage, the excellent Vietnam War era (anti)war movie Tigerland which helped propel Colin Farrell's film career, and the 80's cult classic films The Lost Boys and Flatliners. He also directed a pair of John Grisham crime adaptions The Client and A Time to Kill as well as the Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins starring spy thriller Bad Company which I also thought was a pretty neat watch.
Joel Schumacher was also openly gay throughout most of his Hollywood career and claimed to have had sex with thousands of different men. So there's that...
And if you haven't seen Falling Down yet, I highly recommend to watch it and watch it without expectations. It's an extremely relevant movie, especially now since it touches on a lot of things immediately relevant to society now such as consumerism, race relations, poverty and just the culmination of all of lifes accumulating annoyances and stressors.
