WarnerMedias owned service HBO and HBO Max have surpassed 41 million subscribers after releasimg Wonder Woman 1984 and negotiating access to Roku and Amazon streaming devices.

Not interested in it personally because blargh... Who needs more services, but apparently their service is growing beyond their own expectations after what seemed like a fair bit of disappointment in the past few years.

Who knew releasing a years worth of big budget movies exclusively on your streaming service during a Pandemic could lead to such growth? 🤷‍♀️

Are there any actual good movies on there? WW84 has been pretty badly panned by critics across the board...

Actually looking over it...

There's Dune in October, Matrix 4 in December, Suicide Squad in August, Kong v. Godzilla in May and Mortal Kombat in April.

And a bunch of non-blockbusters. So not as overwhelming as I assumed.

I personally liked the movie. I know a lot of critics didn't like and more where disappointed that it was not Woke enough. But it is one of the better DC movies to come out. While I liked the first one better this was a good sequel that built on the themes of the first one.

As for HBO Max, it is ok.

I have it because of a Subscription to HBO. It shines with original tv programming. New shows like are Golden Compass decent and you have hits like Games of Thrones. Others like Watchmen while still true to the base source are not that great plot wise. But overall ones like Netflix match them and Disney+ is catching up very fast.

They also have moved or will be moving all the stuff from the D.C. streaming service over to HBO Max. So you can watch shows like Doompartol.

The movie libary is good but lacks the depth of exclusive movies that Diseny+ has. The real plus is that HBO has newer movies before they hit regular on demand for cable. So if you miss it in the theater there is a good chance you can see it a couple months later on HBO.

I probably would have never gotten it if I did not get as part of my Cable package. But if it is one thing that lets cable live it will be the fragmentation of the streaming services that has been happening. It is long past the days as Netfilx acting as a streaming cable service on the cheap.

Dune may not be. The other major studio involved may sue to keep it a more traditional relsease.

So it should be interesting to see what happens. Once theaters start to reopen and the lure of big blockbusters money comes back. Because while HBO Max saw a sharp increase in subscriptions and viewership hours it remain to be seen in it can match the expected billion dollar box offices. It would also be interesting to see if the new subscriptions are long lasting or quick couple months to just see a new hit movie and a few other things.
