Across all of the games in the franchise since the release of the initial Halo: Combat Evolved back in November of 2001.

As the article states, for comparison, Activision has sold over 400 million copies of various Call of Duty games and Rockstar has sold over 350 million different Grand Theft Auto games though those games were on multiple platforms while Halo was largely restricted to the XBox consoles and later the PC.

This puts Halo right behind Tomb Raider with 85 million games sold and ahead of Monster Hunter and Mortal Kombat franchises with 78 and 73 million games sold respectively. Of course with the upcoming release of Halo Infinite, that'll probably surge the Halo franchise by several million more units in a span of months.

Does an MCC sale count as 1 sale or as 5?

It's probably 1, which is disadvantageous for Halo when compared to other game franchises.

Its also worth noting that Tomb Raider, Monster Hunter, and Mortal Kombat have all had many more entries in them than Halo.

This seems like an unfair comparison-point just because COD releases became almost-sports-game like in their every-year release scheduling there for a while. Hell, I'm pretty sure they still are, they just have a spinoff in off-years or something. That's how it feels, anyways.
Though, to be fair, I'd assume this 81 million sales number includes Halo: ODST, the Wars titles, and Reach (which is pretty big itself), which also have that spinoff status.

Anyhow, seems like a solid accomplishment for what's become Xbox/Microsoft's flagship-character series (flagship characters, even? Since Cortana made the jump to being their assistant mumbo-jumbo as well?).
Personally, I kind've checked-out since 3. Me and the sis got a bit of the way through 4, but the introduction of the new enemy and plot in general felt a bit hamhanded...And, to a maybe-surprising extent for a FPS, that had been a draw for us into the first 3.

Then 5 shot us in the foot and kind of really killed my/our impetus by axing couch cooperative...Though it probably helped that I heard generally mixed and often negative reviews of it's story. I haven't been paying enough attention to Infinite to know if they correct the/my co-op annoyance or carried-on with their previous decision.

Black Ops (as a series) alone has outsold Halo.

Yeah thats the state of Games Journalism I guess. Comparing Call of Duty to Halo of all things. They made note of the multiplatforms of course.

Perhaps more fairly comparable is that off the top of my head Halo far outstrips the sales of franchises like Half Life and Gears of War a couple times over. I'm guessing (though I can't check now) it's probably similar surpassed like Far Cry or Battlefield/Medal of Honor or whatever.
