Announced on December 9th 2022, the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) is a multinational effort started between the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan to develop a sixth-generation fighter, merging their previously established independent 6th Generation Fighter projects such as Japan's F-X and the RAF's BAE Systems Tempest. Towards the end of December, Sweden and Japan also signed an agreement for potential future cooperation related to this project.
Britain and Japan had actually been in talks about merging their 6th Generation projects since 2017 before this idea came to fruition.
The goal is to develop 6th Generation Air Combat Aviation capability by the mid 2030's.
