Movies Geezer Teasers, Action Movies with Old A-Listers

Heard about this from a Red Letter Media Half in the Bag episode that decided to nobly review a dozen or whatever Bruce Willis movies that have been released over the past two years that star him. Notably these movies are actually made in under TWO WEEKS with most of the budget apparently going to the aging A-lister they drag onto the set for a day or two and pay them a million dollars or so.

Anyways, apparently Expendables started this trend but while those movies actually had some interesting concepts and (CGI plugs instead of squibs) action and the actors actually like... showed up on the set and remembered their lines, this entire industry has now launched off and a soulless factory mass produced line of vapid action movies is now being released and morphed into a multi-billion dollar industry.

Most of these movies could be considered "B-Movies" or "Direct to Video" nonsense, but are actually still much worse in quality then even some of the most excretable Roger Corman or Cannon Film productions because there's no talent or passion in the Direction like what you'd of seen with how James Cameron or Martin Scorsese when directing cheap pulp horror movies.

And it's still well below Cannon films because unlike the Deathwish series or something schlocky like Invasion USA and Delta Force, these Geezer Teasers just aren't fun or dark or anything. They just exist to waste time and money and memory inside a RedBox or Streaming service.

Here's the article that the RLM guys were referencing btw.

It's a long article but a great read and would encourage anyone interested in the film industry to read it.

Here's a fun and witty quote:

Vulture said:
Instead of “one for them,” a single good movie exists on the backs of massive comic-book franchises and an endless well of cheap, schlocky action flicks bad enough to make Michael Bay seem like David Lean.

Personally I used to dunk on recent films made by like Liam Neeson or Sylvester Stallone and the like, but at least in their works... they show up to the set and AFAIK, actually put in some effort plus there's an actual budget often involved.

As to the rumors that Bruce Willis is somehow feebleminded that the RLM video brings up, I tend to not think so. He seems pretty self aware that he's just manufacturing crap and earning a million dollars for a week of work.

His Comedy Central Roast seemed to allude to that quite a bit with all of the references to his movies being crappy DVD's.

Apparently there's some media (the rumors surfaced back in January of 2021) that he was suffering from some sort of early-onset memory loss or dementia and now it's a story that's now being reinforced by a Director of some of his recent straight-to-video flicks, Adam Eskandari.

The comments were made apparently in the comments section of the RLM video:

New Zealand Herald said:
Matt Eskandari, who directed several recent Willis films including Hard Kill, Survive the Night and Trauma Center, chimed into the comments section of the video to address the memory loss rumours.

“I read somewhere that Bruce Willis has dementia, that’s he’s not really aware of what’s going on around him,” one user wrote.

Eskandari replied, “Yes this is true my guy I directed four movies with him so I know first hand. It’s (a) sad situation seeing a legend like Bruce deteriorating right in front of your eyes. I saw it while working with him (the) last few years.”

Replying to another user who said Willis had “fallen from grace” after working with directors like Quentin Tarantino, Brian De Palma and Wes Anderson, Eskandari wrote bluntly, “He has dementia."

No comment on the accuracy of the claims of dementia.

But given the nature of the movies it's not hard to see why someone in Willis' position might do them. Get paid a million bucks to show up and do a day's work? Sign me the fuck up. He still gets to be an actor and make bank without having to commit to the kind of schedule that someone starring in a big-budget movie would. It's a part time job that pays more than most people make in a lifetime. Even if he's got all his faculties, that's got to hold a lot of appeal for anyone in late-middle age.
