Gate opens up on the World of Gaia. (Escaflowne)

As the Tin says:

Gate opens up near Fanelia and accidentally stops its sacking by hitting Dilandau's Guymelefs as they wake up from their bivouac.

In Fanelia, Van Fanel is coronated as King of Fanelia with the right to pilot Escaflowne. Since Fanelia's Army is vague along with its territories and population, I will state it to be Fanelia itself at 200,000 folks and situated right on a giant Iron Mine which is the basis of its wealth with its surrounding mountains being rife with iron mines. Its Army is 20,000 folks on paper divided into 3 Armies of 5,000 men each (Tusk, Horn, and Claw) with 5,000 support troops who don't leave the city and its valley. Its big advantage is the approach to its walls, and its 120 Guymelefs not counting Escaflowne. Outside the valley, Fanelia controls an area roughly the size of Rhodes on paper, but actual reality limits its authority to a valley the size of New York City with the City of Fanelia being the size of the Bronx. Outside the valley is steppe land that is largely indefensible and used by caravans and herders owing nominal tribute to Fanelia.

It is thanks to these caravans that King Van Fanel receives early warning of the Invasion and orders out the garrison to hold the pass as a first line of defense.

Guymelefs are tough mechas but can be damaged by the artillery the Empire brings and simply swarmed by their dragons. Big enough ogres can even directly tangle with them. By the time the Empire reaches the pass after reconnaissance flights spot it, Van has it well sealed with emplaced artillery in protective cover.

The Empire's Expeditionary Leader, Armandus Longinus, knows a difficult fight when he sees one, and his recon flights inform him that without this secure valley as a forward base, he can't sustain his campaign.

Thus King Van Fanel faces a choice, he can take the Empire's offer of vassaldom in return for Fanelia being safe or he can slug it out.

Escaflowne IIRC had magical mecha and other over the top magitech, so I think that the Empire is toast.

That said, I haven't seen Escaflowne aside from the first episode, and that was years ago, so that is a huge assumption.

Yes and no.

Zaibach was a big outlier and only one other nation had firepower to match and even they considered it a big deal to just use it as it hurt them as much as it did Zaibach.

Also there are a lot of mercenaries running around with Guymelefs who won't say boo if the Empire offers pay and loot and they had leviships as well to help move their Guymelefs around.

It is technically possible for the Empire to fight Gaian Militaries, albeit with a learning curve and needing to do Alliances as they adopt Guymelefs themselves plus leviships. What would be even funnier is that they look at Earth up in the Sky and decide, hey lets open another Gate onto that world connected to this world as well. What could possibly go wrong...

If Van fights it out, the Empire is looking at a protracted battle for weeks with 40% losses. If Van decides better to swallow his pride, manipulate the Empire into attack a larger nation and then backstab them, could lead to other possibilities. Or if he remains to his oath of Vassaldom, the Empire will have a starting core of Guymelefs with which to become players.

It's hard to say.

Fanelia's military strength seemed to have been totally dependent on their cadre of Guymelefs (which IIRC seemed to be really slow and cumbersome compared to Van's and Allen's mechs), and once those were taken out, Fanelia fell overnight. So I doubt the number of infantry will make much of a difference. Even if we are generous and give Fanelia dozens of more mechs thanks to their wealth, I'd imagine that the magic used by the empire would be able to trip up and trap those mechs. So in that case I'd say that the odds are against Fanelia. However, Fanelia's greatest asset would be Van using the Escaflowne, which can fly. Skillful use of it could turn the tide of the war. Hard to say.

Also, as aforementioned, there are other forces in Gaia that could change the situation.
