Dorothy Catherne Fontana or DC Fontana passed away on December 2nd. She adapted the name D.C. Fontana because it was gender blind. She wrote numerous episodes during the original Star Trek series run in the 1960's, including the highly praised TOS episodes such as 'This Side of Paradise' which is credited for developing a great deal of Vulcan culture and Spock's character, 'Tomorrow is Yesterday' which is regarded as one of the best Star Trek episodes dealing with time travel (including the use of the Slingshot Maneuver) as well as helping in writing The Enterprise Incident, The Ultimate Computer and Journey to Babel.
She later wrote a single episode (and other writing including novels) for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and a pair of episodes of Babylon 5, including Legacies, one of the few episodes written outside of the B5 offices and helped detail and introduce a fair bit about the Minbari during that series somewhat weak first season.
