How would horror movies like The Grudge go?

One of the lures of horror movies is that protagonists can't fight against the evil and either rising up to the challenge or falling to the horrors. Evil Dead would be rather boring if the merry bunch was heavily armed badasses and Braindead would be a damn short movie if Lionel dealt with his mother decisively the moment she turned into zombie.

How would the horror movie monsters react though?

That said, I get why people like it, but half the time I tend to feel that someone has to shove a shotgun down the slasher's throat. Literally.

Good horror movies work with the characters not being stupid/unprepared.

except both the appeal of both Doom & the army of Darkness is that Neither protagonist is stupid and both can laugh at the face of danger. Slasher movies are typically liked for the slashers themselves but the movies they are apart of are mainly liked ironically.

One of the biggest complaints I saw about Freddy Vs Jason was the fact that there was still a lot of emphasis put on characters that no one cared about. Replace said slasher bait with Ash Williams or sarah conner and you get a missed opportunity.

However the Army of Darkness was the third movie in the series, which Ash started as a bumbling fool and only through great personal loss did he grew into bumbling badass. If everyone in the cabin in the Evil Dead was a badass monster hunter, then it would have ended in the first movie.
Not to mention that it would be hard to class AoD as a horror movie, it's more of an action comedy.
