Adventurer Conqueror King is a pen and paper RPG published in 2012 that I recently became aware of since the author is doing a promotional tour for ACKs II, his new addition coming out soon. I was drawn in by its focus on simulation, and high level play. As designed, the game assumes one starts as an adventurer, conquers a kingdom of their own, and then rules it.

Since it is such a relatively old game with a new addition comings out, the basic core rule book is available free, either as a website (website link) or a scanned PDF of the book. None of the other books seem to be available, leading me to suspect its intentional. I am currently reading through and practicing some elements of the rules with the aim of running a game soonish. If I get that up and running, I'll try discussing my experience and option of the game itself.

At this point though, I have primarily been drawn in by listening to the creator Alexander Marcris and his arguments for the merits of games like his.

This substack post gives a good example of the variety of his content, between articles, edited videos, and interviews/panels.

Hopefully this is on interest to someone, and my terrible selling of it bring someone amusement or intellectual stimulation. Or maybe someone's heard of him/this system before and can point out his/its crippling flaws.

ACKs is great to get that old school dungeon crawling progression from dirt smeared adventure to reigning king. I've found it best used in westmarches style campaigns with emphasis on taming the lands and building a civilization. It has rules for running domains and managing armies and resources.

Its also very crunchy, if you like math you'll get a lot of use out of all the little sub systems and mini games.
