    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

*snort* I suppose the Dulebian language would be an offshoot of Croatian dialects, then, since it explicitly isn't an offshoot of the West Slavic languages?

The Egyptians are fucked yes, and this may alleviate some of the pressure on the Holy Land in the future. Also, yes, Ethiopia and the Horn becoming a bastion of Orthodox Islam is a possibility. On other matters, looks like the British did Agincourt some four centuries in advance.

DEUS VULT BEGINS. Also: The Emperor, a true Roman. He even names his children as predictably as they did. Agree with ATP that bad times are coming for the Caliphate - the Crusade on its own would be bad enough; coupled with a Civil War... I wonder how much will future Muslims blame this...

Agreed. Land reform is best done on your defeated foreign enemy's lands. I do think the early 900s are a bit early for a Crusade, though(closer to 1000 AD would be better timed to take advantage of the zeitgeist). The border between Islam and Christendom being closer to the Holy Land and Egypt...

D'oh! Typo. I meant it wasn't as much of a victory.

Looks like this Battle of Caporetto was as much of a victory as the real Caporetto.

Notes 8, 9 and 10 are duplicated - they first appear in the Venice & Adriatic section, then reappear in the Norse & Picts sections. Looks like the germ for the future fragmentation of the Italian Peninsula is sown.

It looks like the Muslims are finally having a taste of what ails the Romans so much - whenever they are on the way to establish superiority over the enemies of one side of the empire, the situation on the other side goes bad, and they are forced to divert their attention to it.

Yes, that's a big part of the reason I asked. More of Aristotle being preserved could lead to an earlier attempt to conciliate Aristotle's ideas and christian theology.

The latest chapter just reminded me of something I had already wondered about: are we going to see a Saint Thomas Aquinas-like figure here? Yes, I know, he's some 5 centuries in the future in OTL, but I can't help but wonder.

Intersting, Espanesco looks like(as far as I can see from 5 words) a middle-road between Portuguese and Spanish, but without the written idiosyncrasies of Gallician, which serves this role in OTL.

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

It looks like the Roman Empire will be eternally locked into putting down fires in the East and the West, with one side erupting into chaos whenever a resolution on the other side looks possible.

    Alternate History Vivat Stilicho!

Truth be told, I was thinking more of the Celtiberians, which had already been heavily romanized by the 400s, but some influence persisted in the language; there are a few words in Portuguese and Spanish that come from Celtic languages instead of Latin - 'coelho(Port.)/conejo(Sp.)' - 'rabbit' -...

The words of Bretanego you posted made it look to me like a Spanish-Catalan hybrid, which makes sense, as the Iberian Peninsula was also settled by romanized Celts.

I assume this is in the same place as(or close to) OTL Zagreb? Hm. Perhaps Emperor Heijou will learn here the same lesson the Taira would learn 600 years later in OTL, about not sparing the enemy's children?
