Silent Hill 4 got me with how the "safe area" worked. The apartment was always ok, you could always get back and be fine... until... it also was no longer safe. There was just a sense of... dread is the correct word. Later in the game, you're never safe.

The old "The Thing" game, despite being a fairly low budget affair, was awesome. I don't think i've ever been filled with more dread than Silent Hill 4: The Room.
