    We didn't really go out of our way to get Florida or much of anything west of the Mississippi river prior to the Spanish-American War. That was all either bought and paid for (Napolean needed cash and we could write the cheque, fr'ex) or a country (California and Texas, BTW) applying for statehood.

    The US is kinda/sorta the western hemisphere's delinquent big brother. "I can bully my younger siblings. You can not and there will be hell to pay if you try."

    Good. While the western hemisphere can be like a group of unruly toddlers who hate each other there's one thing we can all agree on: picking a fight with one of us means that you get to deal with all of us.

    If by "American thing" you're referring to all of North America, South America, and the Carribean you are correct. EDIT: The parts of the western hemisphere which do have a monarch are constitunional monarchies and the king or queen is little more than a rubber stamp who says that the paperwork...

    What you're saying makes me think that you dislike Jews. Some of the things you've said about "non-white ancestry" makes me think that you think that everyone who isn't "lilly white" is dumber than a box of rocks. That is not true.

    The Union basically followed Lt. Gen. Winfield Scott's "Anaconda Plan" of strangling the South. In 1861 he was too old to implement it and had to retire.
