In other words both General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin are telling the Navy "We don't want to get stuck with the bill if what you're asking for doesn't work as specified because we're pretty sure we can't meet your specifications."
It actually does burn hot enough to melt steel under the right conditions. One of the questions engineers must answer when using hydrocarbon fuels is "How do I cool this?"
Most people don't understand the concept.
Someone who does will notice and stop pouring money into a bottomless well of "that money, or what I bought with it" will never be seen again. They'll also write it off as a learning experience.
Someone who doesn't will not notice and keep adding "just...
They'll also get slapped by the expensive "we want something which does everything" bullshit.
You want to know what the best dogfighter of WWII was? It wasn't the Zero or Spitfire. It was the SBD Dauntless (i.e.: "Slow, But Deadly). They had airframes stressed for 12g, dive bombing, and carrier...
Spellcheck. Please use it.
As for something else: If I'd have added ROTC to my college schedule when I was 17 I'd probably be up for promotion to Brigadeer General/Rear Admiral ... or I would have been dismissed because I was inadaquate long ago.
Racism was the reason because he and his wife were the grandchildren of a Samurai who was also a US Army Civil War vet and, in 1942, if they'd been near the Pacific coast instead of Chicago they'd wound up in an internment camp.
Bolded the relevant part.
My grandmothers' older brother and uncle were sent to Bolivia in 1942 because my great-grandfather - a WWI vet - wanted them to be very far away from WWII. Boy Scouts stole the iron fences his yard had during a scrap drive and got an "attaboy" instead of a stern...
Especially since a lot of civies have friends, relatives, and or co-workers who were military and get to hear about shenanigans which aren't going make the news everyone gets access to.
You know that "dropped the grenade, threw the pin" story that seems like it's made up BS and used for a scene...
The US actually has eight military branches, not the six of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard which ususally get mentioned. There's also the NOAA and USPHS. Those two branches are lead by Admirals.
When our receptionist is asked to work overtime she's not happy and bitches. Her hourly overtime pay rate is also slightly higher than what Biden gets if the US President's salary were to be converted to a 40hr/wk equivalent.
I find it amusing that @Zachowon is defending military pay and benefits. The gal who handles the phones and keeps track of everthing where I work doesn't have the college degree OCS requires and would never be considered for OCS even if she did because she's too old and needs a cane to walk...
You get benefits a typical civilian doesn't. Those benefits also come with strings attached a lot of people will take one look at and say "not worth it" to.
That was just base pay.
Service members also have to put up with a lot more BS. They also can't say "I'm done with this", clock out, and walk out the door - never to be seen again - at any given moment the way a cashier can.
