Battletech BattleTech discussion thread: May the light of Hanse Davion guide us

I did some theory work once, trying to compromise between realistic range and movement speed. Upped each hex to be about 250m across, which makes the weapon ranges more palatable (a machinegun now hits out to 750m, an AC/2 hits out to 6km, and so on.) It's not perfect, but it's arguably better...

I read the Techmanual, just trying to find some practical examples. The big takeaway I got from the Techmanual was that Omnitechnology isn't as plug and play for vehicles as it is for BattleMechs. At least when it comes to turrets. As you said, turret mass is fixed for a design, and to avoid...

Not original poster, but I'm familiar with what they are, what they do, and their limitations if you are interested? For other news - what are some good Omnivehicles? Trying to understand the general design principles behind them.

Or, you could flip them the double bird, firing your torso weapons while waiting for the heat from your arm weapons to cool off.

There are a few cases of that. The "IIC" variants are new mechs descended from the originals, but with advanced technology. Similarly, there's also the Atlas, Atlas II, and Atlas III. Though, yeah. Those are pretty lackluster trees compared to the Mad Cat.

I have to say I was never really into the hobby aspect of BattleTech. I liked the rules, and the game, but I never really had the time to sit down and paint models. I can appreciate the work that went into them - just not my cup of tea. Also... the Mad Cat really did have an interesting...

I mean I like the idea, I just think that it could get complicated quick (would each crew member have their own gunnery skill? How do you track who fires what? Firing Arcs would necessitate up to five gunners [front, right, left, rear, turret,] depending on how many sponson turrets you have...

Though, the Merkava (like I said) was a vehicle that ended up winning in this conversion. Vehicles using ICE or Fuel Cell Engines might need to allocate more weight for heat sinks to fire their weapons/drive (when they didn't before.) Vehicles that didn't use to have to allocate for turret armor...

So... A little while back, I said I'd take a look at trying to modify vehicle construction rules. As for what I have thus far: The main thing I did here was making it so that vehicles operated on the same critical hit system as BattleMechs did. At the start, a vehicle will have 28/72 Crits...

An updated version of the Swordsman? Modern equipment, bigger engine, jump-capable... basically an improvement in every way but in cost and availability as I understand it.

Ah, I see. Well, even with the added M Laser, it’s still going to be running a maximum of 11 heat a turn with 10 heat sinks. Maybe if the design ran more hot it’d have more utility, but I think the benefits of crit-packing outweighs increased heat dissipation, in this case. Thanks for taking...

So, having made the move from digital (first the BattleTech game, then MegaMek) to tabletop, I have to say I'm starting to understand various mechanics and systems better. Though, I have a question: can the Locust (LCT-1E variant) be optimized better? This question came during my first match...

Does anyone know the canonical explanation for why drone systems get proportionally heavier with the unit? Gameplay-wise, I know it is meant to balance them out, but I'm trying to understand the lore reasoning behind it. I had a thought as I was working on revised vehicle combat/construction rules.

One time I ended up running an experiment in regards to the heat-management aspect of Vehicles. Basically, I decided to see what would happen to a vehicle design if it only required as many heat sinks as the minimum required to fire the highest heat-generating weapon. A compromise between...

Speaking of LAMs... Would there be any merit to trying to build an independent AirMech? As in a Mech permanently stuck in that mode? On one hand, it would have slow speed when walking or running on the ground, and be unable to independently enter or leave atmosphere. On the other, not needing...

I also see you incorporated BattleMech Turrets into the side torsos? Interesting, what weapons are those attached to? Otherwise, Bomb Bays also let it carry bombs (or rocket pods, but I think that the Blood Spirits would draw the line there,) as well, which gives it a degree of versatility...

The terrible range of AC's, if I understand you correctly? Keep in mind, BattleTech has shorter engagement ranges than modern/realistic warfare anyway (for a number of reasons: ranging from ECM to LosTech.) Like I thought. Yeah, it was a problem with my original design in that it was *way*...

Fool the enemy into thinking that you have an AC/20, like the Arbiter? I did a bunch of weapons when I was creating the Huskarl. Assuming you're going for cost, might these be of use? Keep in mind, these assume Standard Armor. AC/5 * AC/5 [8 tons] * @AC/5 AMMO (20)...

I... didn't know about this. Going to have to experiment around, thanks! I don't know if I can put it in a BattleMech, but it gives me the idea for a "Poor Man's Omni" version of an IndustrialMech! Do you have a source for the +1 to all attacks? I saw that they get a +1 penalty to piloting...
