United States California approves 1st state-funded guaranteed income plan

Eventually, we're going to get to the point where people will have to accept Chinese levels of wages (think about $0.50 an hour) in order to compete with automation. It may not happen within our lifetimes, but it will happen. Not when you factor in inflation.

United States California approves 1st state-funded guaranteed income plan

You seem to be locked into the perspective that automation can only happen on the assembly line; which is an extremely narrow mindset. Yes, machines that makes links in a chain cannot do anything else, you're not wrong about that; but that's far from the only thing that can be automated. The two...

United States California approves 1st state-funded guaranteed income plan

Helicopters are not flying cars; and flying cars never became a thing because they are a work of fiction that ignorant people just assumed would eventually become commonplace. Automation, meanwhile, is a thing that already exists and is constantly improving. To argue that the "circumstances of...

United States California approves 1st state-funded guaranteed income plan

That's a terrible analogy that has absolutely nothing to do with the conversation at hand.

United States California approves 1st state-funded guaranteed income plan

You didn't answer my question; what jobs, specifically, are those people going to find after their current ones are rendered obsolete? We're not talking about an entire industry going extinct; we're talking about dozens of the largest and most widely employing industries going from employing...

United States California approves 1st state-funded guaranteed income plan

Okay; a little over 3.6 million people in the United States are employed in the transportation industry, whereas around 3.2 million are retail sales people, and 3.1 million are cashiers. Assuming most of those jobs are automated, which is not out of the question, where exactly are all those...

United States California approves 1st state-funded guaranteed income plan

That's why I said trying to implement a UBI right now is pointless; we have purge the government of corruption first before we try to fix anything else. That's one way to look at it I suppose; though I'd argue that being forced into wage slavery isn't any better.

United States California approves 1st state-funded guaranteed income plan

That's why you have to shut down every other welfare program before you institute a Universal Basic Income; so long as you do that, the costs should equal out. All a UBI is, ideally, is a streamlining of our current expansive welfare system into a single lump sum that everyone receives...

United States California approves 1st state-funded guaranteed income plan

Most of those flaws has to do with how complex and restrictive the welfare system is, in an attempt to ensure that the money only goes to certain people, and can only be spent on certain things. If we just gave everyone a flat sum of money, no strings attached, people wouldn't be encouraged to...

United States California approves 1st state-funded guaranteed income plan

Don't get me wrong; I am not against having a welfare system. I just think what we have now is wasteful, and incentives dependency and stagnation. Wiping the slate clean and replacing everything with a Universal Basic Income seems like it would be a massive improvement.

United States California approves 1st state-funded guaranteed income plan

Any attempt at reforming the welfare system is going to hampered by the fact that nearly every other aspect of the government is in need of it as well, up to and including our election system. Because they all interact with each other to make it damn near impossible to actually fix anything...
