    Which just serves to prove my point; marketing is king when it comes to what sells. It's not perfect of course, but even a terrible product can potentially sell like crazy with a good enough marketing campaign. And a game like Skyrim? Is far from being terrible.

    And yet, how many of those other games got a commercial that aired on television? Never underestimate the power of marketing, as it often is the deciding factor in what becomes popular with the general masses.

    Marketing, and the pedigree of being the fifth in a long-running game franchise. The fact that the game was actually a pretty good open world RPG on top of that, is what pushed it over the edge into becoming a classic in many people's eyes.

    Stock Skyrim's inventory management alone is something I never want to deal with again; SkyUI is downright mandatory if I am to have any fun with the game.

    I'd challenge anyone to try to play Skyrim without a single mod; it's not a terrible game by any means, but I argue it's nowhere near a "Game of the Year" experience on its own.

    The fact that modders can fix Bethesda's games at all is proof that the issue isn't with the engine they're built upon, but rather with the developers building them.
