Well, my thinking was, that, in his own way, he saw no way out and despised what he had become and just wanted a way out yet have plausible deniability for screwing over his family. Its a theory, nothing more.

Understandable. I share your frustrations with that attitude. Never the less, I feel it is infact counter productive to get personal. Quote the the facts. They speak for themselves. Ask pointed questions. Logic and reason will win this argument. Not getting into your emotions.
