I imagine this would "feel" more like EDF meets X-Com, if the Ethereals (or your pick of classic "Man Behind The Man") are in a similar superior position. Just flat-out EDF meets X-Com is of course another "well I guess that works", infusing near-infinite ham into X-Com's stakes.

I've thought about Starcraft and 40k crossing over quite a lot, as there's many small overlaps you can use to do very extensive canon-welding with the aid of the 20+ millennia of time separating them, while 40k's logistical issues allow Starcraft to get away with unbelievable amounts of shit...
