    They only developed them when they saw Shermans own their older tanks. It's like saying why didn't Americans make Shermans before joining the war.

    It was either make shitty light tanks, or have half as many not so shitty tanks that are harder to make and transport. And with how few tanks they made to begin with, making half as many would be terrible for them.

    Japan had absolutely insane internal military politics, and one of things that added up badly to that was a steel shortage. And two things that would take a lot of steel are warships and tanks - so they skimped on armor for both to save steel.

    I think the bigger problems for this are political and economic than technological. The logistical issues are a money solvable problem. But the questions are, is that worth the money, and how do you get all the countries on the way to cooperate?

    Outside of certain subsections of Muslims in western world, and perhaps Central Asia, there are way more nuts than that. More like low double digit percent in the major countries associated with Islam, like Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey. Also Turkey is hardly the most secular Muslim country around...
