I remember watching a behind the scenes documentary that went into detail on how they created mail for the movies using slices of plastic pipe. I also remember that in TTT that all the main characters at Helm's Deep added mail to their outfits, with Gimli adding a bit of humor to that.

Things like that never matter to them in that way. If anything, it works for them as they do their best to erase history.
