British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

So ... the Allies need to figure out the relevance of the rail network for the Soviet war effort first :p Otherwise the pursuit of the Holy Grail of Douhetist dogma i.e. winning a war by bombing alone will involve chasing the flavour of the week - first ball bearings, then pork bellies, then...

British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

In spite of Allied air supremacy German trains kept on running. Same will happen here. With all those airplanes around, especially Bomber Command and the US strategic forces, how does the logistical pipeline cope?

British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

The last I read was that there was no Battle of Prochorovka whatsoever - that it is entirely a Soviet fabrication. But the fuck I know ... BTW - Rudel's claims are as close to the truth as editorials in Pravda, New York Times or Volkischer Beobachter ... "No shit! I was out of ammo so I then...

British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

I wrote "most would have to be set up". You list four or five, yet - as IMO an Army is needed per every ten divisions or so - a few more (like in doubling or tripling their number) would be needed. Very nice post, BTW :) I'm not saying that the Wallies are doomed - but that they would have a...

British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

So, in a roundabout way, I reinforce my initial thought that the Wallies are up shit creek. Even if technologically equal or better (e.g. the 6pdr is enough to stop all Soviet tanks - assuming it gets the proper ammunition), they are outnumbered, and - very, vewy important - the Wallies are...

British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

Cannot take urban areas. Cannot hold close terrain. There is a long list of reasons why infantry is still around today alongside tanks. An army needs an infantry&tanks mix, the exact mix depending upon terrain. And there is lots of close country In Russia - forests! E.g. in OTL the tank heavy...

Shows how atypical NATO was - too many armoured formations.

British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

As to the Polish II Corps - sorry for derail, BTW - the only part of it which had been fighting earlier was the Carpathian Rifles Infantry Brigade Group. All the rest was formed, from scratch, from broken up (these were barely formed anyway) units evacuated from the Soviet Union. And in the ME...

Plus I presume whatever is in the UK? Which would include the Polish II Corps. I'm not sure if it was combat ready in IV.1943 anyway.

British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

The maximum possible is two offensives of 300-500km each. After such a leap you stop to establish railroad supply as trucks alone no longer cope. It is almost like a Law of Physics :) So, in nsuch a scenario the New Year frontline is somewhere around the USSR western border of '39. The Wallies...

British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

Oh, live and learn. I thought that by 2Q1943 the war material crisis was over. Hardworking horses need oats, it is not enough to send them out to pasture (which also is very time consuming). So I'd expect oats to have made a large portion of shipments from the Vaterland.

British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

I know about Corps and Army troops - but as their number is (roughly) tied to the number of Divisions, then IMO these are useful yardstick of coverall combat strength. And the Soviets had Army and Corps level (even if called Front and Army) assets too ... So you ended up with 80 Divisions for...

British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

La-la land :) Already noted that these Divisions are all over the world spread across various fronts; Also - activated does not mean combat ready - at first glance I can see Free Polish formations which are NOT. And that's the tip of the iceberg of formations which are being organised...

British and Americans armies of 1943 vs Soviet army of 1943

The Wallies get swamped? Although their Divisions are bigger, there is - top of mind - one fourth? one third? of them versus what the Heer had? Still, if they attack once the mud season is over then they might wing it, due to being fully motorised.
