The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

Guys. "Muh right to a privately owned nuclear weapon" is a parody talking point raised as mean-spirited mockery. Please stop living down that parody.

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

No, because you haven't demonstrated that you have the skill to actually back up any of these hypotheticals. Getting ahold of an object that can be used as a weapon is easy, actually winning a fight with it is not. I carry a knife while I'm out and about, that doesn't mean I should be believed...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

That's iffy. Automatic weapons and explosives are still overkill for that, and legally it would be a bad idea to try and employ them for that. The "just grab [random object] and insert into eyeball/throat/etc" thing is a great trick in action movies, which is also the only place it's viable...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

Constraining firearms to only those that have a valid civilian use is directly in opposition to the meaning of the second amendment in the first place, which grants civilians the right to own firearms to defend themselves against any aggressor, not any aggressor other than the state. Given...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

Gun violence, probably not, most countries don't have access to guns. But overall violence, I'd say that's plausible. The issue would be in checking. Beijing, for example, is fairly close in size, but Chinese crime reporting is not reliable. Other countries might have a similar population, but a...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

Well, that's hard to say. Looking at US homcide by motive, about 40% of the time it's because of an argument, and 23% of the time it's related to some kind of felony. In the UK, it's broadly similar as far as motive, but they have a somewhat higher rate caused by arguments and a lower rate...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

Just so we're on the same page, what do you mean by "the problem"? I have no conceptual objection to universal background checks, it's basically already the law outside of private sales, and provided a reasonable mechanism exists to carry out said checks, I don't see any issue with it. It's...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

It's amusing how thanks to varying levels of precision between posters, the difference between the US and Australian population is slowly increasing. First ten times, then 13, then 13.5, now 15. Wonder how high it'll go?

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

There's no such thing as a "proper mass shooter", the term has no defined meaning. The closest is the FBI's definition of "mass murder", but since they definition it as 4 or more people killed, your stuff counts. Under that definition, most of yours still count. And once we slim our list down...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

US murder rate is 5.30, yours is 0.80. That's 6 times more, not 50. For a population 13.5 times bigger. Math doesn't appear to be a strong suit of yours.

That list has like two dozen incidents, that's a lot more than "a handful". It's also got roughly the same number of events and same number of deaths as you had before port arthur. "We're doing better now, once we throw out all these data points that say we're doing worse". Given the US has...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

You gun ban appears to have had no effect on your murder rate, it was trending down before the ban and has continued to trend downward at the same rate, and based on this, the ban no perceivable effect on the prevalence of high profile, high bodycount events.

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

What good do you believe such a policy would lead to? Given that other countries that have actually enacted such bans showed no change in thier murder rates pre and post ban, why would it work in the US when it didn't work overseas?

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

But....that's not what the traditional focus has been. Pushes for an assault weapon ban or similar anti-scary black rifle bills and rhetoric is way more common than attempts to ban handguns. No, I don't think I will. I've read enough, and thus far you've just insisted it's wrong because you...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

Well, coyote's are pretty small, and isn't the rule for boar something like "we don't care what you use, just kill them"? They use 5.56 because it's small enough to carry loads of for use in suppression fire, while still being relatively lethal for it's size or something, right?
  16. Battlegrinder

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

Hell, isn't 5.56 considered inhuman to use for hunting human sized animals, because it's not lethal enough to kill them quickly and reliably? There's gotta be some reason most hunting rifles are chambered in .308 and 30-06, and based on the last time I was in a gun store, it's not price or...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

I live in rural Illinois, trust when I say I have far more reasons to hate and distrust the Chicago city government and Cook county than you likely ever will. That said, I don't see why they'd lie here, and if they had manipulated this data, I imagine it would suggest that the primary weapon...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

No, they don't. I posted a study that traced where they get weapons, they get them domestically. If you think otherwise, fine, but post some actually evidence that validates your claim. No, they're not: I see a bunch of 38 revolvers, a bunch of .40s and 9mms, mostly by hi point, Smith and...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

Maybe for the cartels or something, yes. But that's not how the US illegal weapons market seems to work. It might start to work that way if a ban comes through and the cartels see a chance for profit, but right now US gun violence uses US guns. I guess at least some people still Buy American...

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of Gun Control

Not quite, the majority are bought from the black market, according to this DOJ report. At least on the user end, I'm not quite sure how those guns get to the black market, but given the relatively short time between pruchase and recovery for many guns, straw purchasing seems likely.
