United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

This is a good point, that the recent libertarian candidate references:

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

Just because something has a political view doesn't make it propaganda. Or maybe more accurately, just because art is critiquing an ideology doesn't necessarily discredit the message. You pointed out what was wrong with the Handmaid's tale, but not what was wrong with Bioshock. I haven't played...

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

The right not to be murdered is a negative right. It's about not being interfered with. A positive right is more like the 'right' to healthcare, or the 'right' to a living wage, or the 'right' to housing. Basically, these rights create a duty to act on another, as opposed to negative rights...

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

No, that's too limiting of a definition, and also not specific enough. A libertarian does not need to believe in a government, for example. Also, what rights are you talking about? Libertarians generally don't believe in positive rights, for example.

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

An actual libertarian, at the basic level, believes something along the lines of the Non-aggression principle, including it's major corollary, free market capitalism.

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

Yeah, I get I need to start building a castle in the sky somewhere if I don't have God. I try to build it as low to something like the ground as I can, but there are limits to how good I can get.

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

Sure, just @ me! I always make time for people trying to convert me.

That's why the rule is "don't bother me or else."

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

I mean, that's an argument that things would be better if your God exists, not an argument that God exists. And quite simply, I cannot with any honesty believe in God. At which point, I have to build a morality, but I have little to no framework to put it on. I wish I could believe in a god, and...

At the time I posted this, it wasn't that bad. In addition, lawsuits are going to come about the unequal orders, and hopefully fix this. If it's like this six months from now, yeah, I'll be incredibly worried. It does point out that even the first amendment doesn't go far enough though.

I was taking a long view, but yes, the shutdowns are a huge step in the wrong direction.

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

To cut a long argument short, I have looked at proofs for the existance of god extensively, and haven't found them very convincing, with perhaps Godel's coming the closest, but it fell well short. And even if you do show a god, why your god? Why should your morality follow from proving a god...

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

Then who does? Really, that is an important question. I cannot believe in God honestly, as I have seen no evidence for one, much less the Christian one. So if I don't accept your god, where do my sexual ethics come from? Either they can be derived philosophically from some other ethics, or it is...

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

Ultimately, all of libertarianism relies on the axiom that private property matters, just as much as Christian morality depends on god existing. Don't hurt people and Don't take their stuff is just a simple way of stating the NAP. It of course loses some fidelity by being a quick summary...

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

First, you assume that libertinism is inherently immoral in the opinion of libertarianism. I disagree. If you want to buy drugs, and have a ton of sex with willing partners, and add nothing to society, that's fine. You aren't harming people. I'll hold you in a little contempt, as you aren't...

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

Politicians not sticking to ideals? I, for one, am shocked. Meanwhile, the more complex worldviews are violated by its adherents all the time. Libertarianism, by not asking for world shaking demands, actually has a large number of people who meet those demands, and live good lives.

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

Sure, but every moral principle is twisted when you redefine what the words mean. Also, the definition of violence doesn't matter to the NAP. The NAP cares about aggression (not violence), and further flows out of the respect for private property, which defines what aggression is: harming...

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

No, it definitely has a morality, envisioned in the NAP. The morality is "Don't hurt people, and don't take their stuff." This is probably the only one of the four it definitely has. The purpose is what is most lacking, as by definition, libertarianism can't really put a demand on you to do...

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

Every year, the libertarian party balances two interests: getting elected and getting our ideology out there. Vote share is incredibly important, as hitting the 5% level of popular vote gives access to federal campaign financing, which would be huge if slightly hypocritical. Even lower amounts...

United States Why Do Libertarians Always Lose?

I think UBI is a sellable improvement over the current system. At the very least, UBI doesn't incentive earning less, and is a lot more efficient to hand out. I've given up all hope of killing off welfare entirely.
