Personally I don't expect the French cops to do anything much. With the rather major caveat, that unless their government changes course they won't do anything much either, when the rioters go off script and target government buildings, puplic sector class neighbourhood homes and families, etc...

Why would he? A much more realistic position would be for him to declare that the US will not fight to protect any NATO ally, that is not funding it's military to the level required by the NATO treaty. Besides having more political justification to do so, than walking away from NATO entirely...
