Robots will be another piece of equipment for the soldier on the ground. I think that instead of sending out a contact patrol and putting your biggest fuckup on point he'll be in the middle, wearing an armored frame and in command of combat bots in front and behind. There is no need for flesh and blood to soak up the bullets. Imagine a mortar section that walked along with the squad, able to communicate with the squad's integrated drone and use it to aim, something that carried both the tube and ammo and just squatted down to fire. Even worse for the enemy would be a machine gun walker, or some fast spiderlike thing, low to the ground and among you and spitting bullets before you can react.
In limited conflicts robots will serve to keep the political backlash from losing men down. Why send troops to patrol when gun bots can kick a door down just as easily? The downside is that idiots get elected and think its not really war if they don't send men.
Even a lightly armored autonomous cart armed with a SAW type light MG would be a terrifying foe in an asymmetrical situation. Imagine sitting in the cellar with your friends, plotting to knock one out, knowing that it had drone coverage and all kinds of backup. Unlike today's guerilla conflict where the occupier swaps people in a battle of attrition for the disposable retards of some third party and fights a domestic political battle with those that place their own ambitions above national policy, the patrol bot would make for a much less tempting target and present little political utility. In fact, they don't have to end their patrol until they need maintenance. You could assign them to permanent positions right in the enemy stronghold to gather intelligence and watch the bastards 24/7/365.
