I am very wary about banning people from owning firearms because of a mental illness. Mental illness can be really subjective and the process of officially labeling someone as mentally ill can likewise be subjective or much less rigorous than a criminal trial with true due process and presumption of innocence. Do we want someone who has ever taken anti-depressants forever banned from exercising one of our most fundamental rights? Should a veteran diagnosed with PTSD be banned from owning a gun? Some psychologist and sociologists are now saying that racism is a mental illness, should racists not have 2nd Amendment rights? What about conspiracy theorists, are they mentally ill? Should people with low IQs lose the right to own guns? What due process will people be given to assess their mental fitness for owning a gun?
Considering how terrible the establishment is and how they are chomping at the bit to exploit such laws, I don’t trust them with that. Before we strip anybody of their rights, there should be the rigorous due process of a criminal trial.
The same goes for red flag laws or the like.
