Why is Skyrim so popular? I never understood it

You get to feel like an unstoppable Badass with an increasing number of powers and can go virtually anywhere in an Open World Environment and constantly make new weapons and armor and an increasing number of titles/positions

Would be better if enemies were actually a challenge and had physical impact and more variation

There are a LARGE number of those games available.

Honestly, the thing I loved about Skyrim was that it was beautiful the first time I loaded it up. Admittedly, it really doesn't hold up nowadays but mods can make it better again. Mostly though, I feel that a large part of it was just my nostalgia for Oblivion. I would have much preffered that they put the kind of work into it that was put into Morrowind though. I want there to be forks everywhere that I can attack people with damnit!

EDIT: to actually put things back on track, I do look forward to what will come out of this. Microsoft these companies under them might get them to actually get their act together.

I just hope Microsoft doesn't screw ID software over.

Eh, I chose to hope that this means we are going to get a whole series of great games out of them. It's probably not going to happen but honestly, I've been checked out of the whole AAA scene for years. And who knows, we might get a decent VR title...

Marketing, and the pedigree of being the fifth in a long-running game franchise. The fact that the game was actually a pretty good open world RPG on top of that, is what pushed it over the edge into becoming a classic in many people's eyes.

It really isn't that special when you look at other open world games from around the same time...
Hell there were A LOT of games that came out the same year!

And yet, how many of those other games got a commercial that aired on television?

Never underestimate the power of marketing, as it often is the deciding factor in what becomes popular with the general masses.

Of that style? not many. Of that year? two of the biggest franchises realsed some of their best selling games that year. EA/Dice had BF3 and COD had MW3 come out that year.
Batman Arkham city, Saints Row 3, uncharted3, one of the biggest youtube sensations and biggest series, Dark souls.. Portal 2, Dead space 2...

Which just serves to prove my point; marketing is king when it comes to what sells. It's not perfect of course, but even a terrible product can potentially sell like crazy with a good enough marketing campaign. And a game like Skyrim? Is far from being terrible.

Yet it also released with two big game series. One of which still has custom fan servers last i checked (BF3)
It is a decent game, but it is overrated

Honestly, I think a significant portion of Skyrim's success came from just how easy it was to mod. Being able to involve the community that they had already built with the Oblivion modding community and put their efforts to a newer game... Skyrim with mods is a much different beast and they were easy to get and already had a huge number of people working on them almost for the word go.

I can see that being a large reason for it

Begun these Console Wars have... For a Ninth time?

It's not really a story IMHO to be honest, but its making the rounds. One Industry Analyst in speaking with the above website stated that Sony could respond by making a purchase of Warner Bros Games which owns the video game properties pertaining to franchises such as DC Comics, Harry Potter and Mortal Kombat since there have been recent reports of AT&T supposedly interested in selling off that property.

It's just one analysts opinion though and later in the article he admits it'd actually make more sense to purchase a smaller property, such as Metal Gear or Final Fantasy.
