What if- no US involvement in Afghanistan? (1980's)

Basically, what would have been the most likely result for the Middle East and the world if the USA didn't help fund the Soviet's enemies in Afghanistan in the 1980's? Would the Soviet Union have fallen later? Would Afghanistan and the Middle East been better off or would they likely have just traded one evil for another?

*Or alternately, didn't give them enough funding. Whichever is more plausible.

Nothing really changes. The Soviet Union was already on the way to failing in the 80s. The Afghan war only sped it up by a year or two. If they took Afghanistan. They would hit the hard stop of Pakistan and India. So It would not be that big a loss in the long run.

A better world long term the Soviets will still take horrible casualties in Afganistan with Chinese advisors training them and the Soviets still will collapse in 1991 as it's to late to save them same old, same old.
