I've started the demo of War Mongrels, which gameplay-wise you could call a spriritual succesor to the old "Commando" games. Pretty dark game. Starts out with two Wehrmacht guys pushed into desertion through circumstances, and has a very cool cutscene art style.

I was inspired by (shamed by) @ParadiseLost threads about unplayed Steam games and a Game a Day challenge so in order to futilely and temporarily escape the wonderful world of domestic feral housewife duties I've undertaken going down my Steam library and looking for games that have been unplayed and might not take ten years for me to complete.

My progress so far this week is I played Age of Wonders III for about 45 minutes, liked its fantasy mechanics and as a game overall seemed pretty solid but it felt less then Total War Warhammer II or Civilization V so yeah... I gave it almost an hour and then moved on.

I passed over Alpha Protocol and the Baldurs Gate I and II remastered games (ain't got that much time) and played through Batman - The Telltale Series and it took me eight hours to get through that game. It was addictive when you get started playing it and I loved it. I've only played the Walking Dead Season 1 before and enjoyed it but never got into the rest. But I think I might've liked Batman just as much, if not more then that. Or maybe it's just not playing a Telltale style game for so long. Either way, would recommend.

My Batman/Bruce Wayne is Merciful, Compassionate, Collaborative, and Dishonest Cunning.

I think that means I'm emotionally manipulative. Typical serial abuser maternal behavior.

Just finished Rise of the Tomb Raider.

"Humans aren't meant to live forever," my goodness, how condescending.
Reminds me of that fable of the Dragon. In case you don't know, it's a story about a town being conquered by a dragon. The townies appease it by sacrificing a child to it every year, and this goes on for a while. Eventually scientists find a way to kill the dragon, but the establishment refuses to use it at first because "the dragon and its misery gives our lives meaning".

The dragon is a metaphor for the Final Enemy, aka Death. So yeah, all these media that decry immortality and the pursuit of it? They are a bunch of whiny faggot hipsters that go sour grapes on the thought that they too have to die one day and so try to assure themselves that they were never meant to be immortal anyway.

Honestly, I felt that having Konstantin and Ana as the protagonists would have been far more interesting.

Playing a close pair of siblings who lead a militaristic cult that is search for an ancient relic that grants immortality sounds a lot more exciting, especially when one of them is a charismatic true believer, and the other is a bitter skeptic who just wants to put off her own imminent death.

I generally consider it a bad sign as to a works quality when the antagonist(s) are much stronger character(s) than the protagonist(s).

The second game's weak point really was Lara's lack of character development. So much happened in the first one, and very little of that was picked up in the second one.

Third has a good amount though

Yes, but my opinion of Rise means Shadow got moved far enough down my backlog priority that I am very unlikely to play it before May of next year, if that.

On that note, I went back to Horizon: Zero Dawn. Its an absolutely amazing game.

Am going to be trying out Empire of Sin

Got it from the Humble Bundle... so it came with a copy of Age of Wonders: Planetfall, which I already own(I preorded the Season Pass... I like Triumph... Also, it was a good decision, very good game.)

PM me if you are interested in a free copy because I have nothing better to do with this gift link.

Don't give it as a gift link. Give it as a code. Despite gift links being a thing, Humble doesn't like people using them and has been known to ban people for "suspicious behavior" with gift links.

Empire of Sin was the only thing in that bundle I didn't own myself, but I didn't consider it worth it given Empire of Sin's 67 metacritic score and 67% Steam score.

Which is a pity, given Empire of Sin was a game I looked forward to when it first announced.

It's literally $18 bucks

It's basically a 66% sale if you buy the whole damn thing for just Empire of Sin

Humble Bundle is nice like that.

I've seen Empire of Sin for $12.

And I wouldn't want to pay even that much for Empire of Sin with its critical reception and reviews.

Having now played some Empire of Sin.

The writing so far is "mixed", I find myself pretty annoyed with the assumptions some characters make and with the game being a bit confusing on what exactly it wants me to do. On the other hand, part of that is that the writing is actually quite good at selling me on the characters relationships.

I can't find my second Speakeasy in the Alcohol Consumption Tab which... I'm not sure if a bug or if it just doesn't have customers?

There's a lot of stats that I don't really understand(what does Shotgun Angle do?).

And the Combat is great, my only complaint is that it tends to be really short so far.

Oh, also, Al Capone using a Tommygun to blast an area and supress everyone in it with a Rifle is hilarious.

I am also probably going to be waiting for the DLC to drop with the free Precint update, it looks like it'll solve a lot of my early pain points and make the game more fun.

Next up on the unplayed Steam Library list is Bulletstorm.

Keep in mind, this is the original Bulletstorm, not the Full Clip Gearbox edition which apparently was a thing that I didn't hear about until playing the original. Supposedly the newer Gearbox version looks pretty, but then again, Bulletstorm already looks beautiful.

Even more importantly then the graphics, the shooting and combat mechanics are top notch. This game was just FUN to play. When I first started it though I was worried that I was actually getting dizzy playing the game, but later on I was able to roll with it. Chances are it was just my maternally addled brain trying to cope with the beautiful death and destruction I was a first person party to partaking combined with the fact I was coming over a Cold.

In short the beautiful vistas were complimented by beautiful gun battles and just as beautiful kills and a skillshot system which allowed me to gain points for creatively murdering my enemies. I could set them on fire, then put them out, then blow their heads off and get points. I could use my energy leash to whip them towards me and then punt them into giant cacti or the maw of a waiting Venus Maneater. I could kick a giant mutant cannibal minigunner in the butt and then use my energy leash to emasculate him... wonderful family friendly fun for the whole family... much like the setting of this game. Then I use these points to buy everything from ammunition to cool new special attacks.

Keep in mind my highest rated kill was worth like two thousand points, and a basic enemy kill (you just boringly shoot them to death) is worth a mere ten points.

It takes place on Stygia, a beautiful resort world that has been overrun with rebellious slave convicts, giant kaiju, mutant tourists and so much more! It's hero-protaganists are overly masculine and badass Gears of War types, the setting is like Mad Max and Borderlands and the game almost never becomes boring. There's always new manic stuff to do and slay.

One would think a game like this would be pretty basic in plot but it's actually remarkably interesting. There's nice worldbuilding that did honestly have me want to know more about this Deathworlds backstory and how it all turned to shit, and a lot of character development and moments. Each of the characters major and minor are fun to learn about and see them interact with each other in cutscenes and dialogue and the voicework is absolutely amazing. There are characters here I love and love to hate to the point its almost too much. Gray, your protagonist, is a wise cracking, musclebound badass but actually has a lot of depth to him and pathos over expressions of war guilt and vengeance and atonement that never seems to get wishy washy (what a relief).

It's almost a perfect shooter for what it is. It's a true tragedy to learn after the fact that this game was a commercial failure because it amazed me even a decade after its release.

Also there are racial slurs!

Okay this last one isn't particular racial but I had to include it nonetheless.

Overall great game. If kids were playing Bulletstorm instead of Fortnite we wouldn't have to work at Making America Great Again. Thanks alot Epic Games and thank you 2011 consumers for not buying the hell out of this modern computer masterpiece.

Next up in the Steam Library. Conflict: Denied Ops? Crysis 2? We'll see.
