So, go for the whales and not for the common people?
It's what casinos do.

They don't give a shit about the people who come in and bet the minimum. They care about the ones who will place the maximum with each bet.

The games favor the house and keeping the whales happy is how a casino stays in business.

That is because the mainstream media needs to push what the liberals want people to see.
Two women kissing isn't why people are staying away. That's actually a turn-on for most demographics.

It's just a movie with an old and tired premise that no one really wants to watch.

It's just a movie with an old and tired premise that no one really wants to watch.

It's a movie made by a studio that primarily targets its movies at kids and families. A considerable part of that demographic still holds to the belief that homosexual relationships are sinful, and the parents don't want their kids seeing homosexual relationships presented as normal and acceptable in their entertainment. Lightyear has been the subject of controversy to those families, on top of everything that's been going on with Disney in the news.

I can't say for sure that conservative families staying away is why Lightyear is underperforming. But it seems highly naive to dismiss any possibility that conservative families are staying away in significant numbers. It's from a well known franchise, a much beloved character, and a well regarded studio. There's no real reason that it should be bombing; blaming it on other reasons feels like looking for excuses so you don't have to say it's because families don't want to see the lesbian relationship in the movie.

Could it also be the fault of inflation? I mean how much does it cost to see a movie these days and why bother when it will be available to buy or stream in six to eight months?

If I can save money watching it at home, where I supply my own refreshments for a fraction of the cost and can watch it on my own time... I'll wait.

Possibly, but that would mean you would see other movies underperforming at the box office. The report is that Lightyear specifically is underperforming compared to its competition at the box office.

Taking my daughters to the theatre is well over $200 once snacks are included. No thank you.

Daddy may have a seemingly bottomless wallet, but that's hitting the bottom of the wallet and the wallet is dry at that depth.

Nothing about Lightyear seems appealing to me. It's a modern Western movie which means it's going to suffer from all of the usual problems of pacing and cinematography and direction and dialogue writing that I dislike about modern Western movies and TV. I don't like the way Pixar draws humans (or rather, the artstyle has become so ubiquitous that is has become bland). And the last Pixar movie I thought was actually good was Up.

If you want your kids to watch a fun family movie, there is a treasure trove of nearly a century of entertainment you can watch at your fingertips. You don't have to go through the hassle of getting dressed up and driving to a theater (in the middle of a heatwave) and eating overpriced sugar food, all just to see a movie that will likely be "meh".

I went to a movie this last Saturday with my wife and saw the Bob's Burger's movie in part because we knew the families with kids would be at Lightyear, but also because Lightyear looks boring. Inflation has made the tickets and concession look more reasonable than it was - popcorn was the cost of a gallon of gas ;)
