Warhammer Warhammer General discussion thread: Now with 100% more Space Marines

Besides the fact that the AsMil is a part of making SuperSoup and all those Command Point generators make the AsMil shooting phase be that turn one or two erasure of the enemy army?

They can almost out gunline a Tau army at this point.

Well, the Toxic Soup I remember facing with considerable dismay consisted of IIRC at least 8 max units of Imperial Guard with max heavy weapons teams and commissars, then added Saint Celestine and her entourage for additional command point generation, a unit of 3 Leman Russ tanks, plus three Blood Angels Smash Captains with Thunderhammers and Shockshields. It was unpleasant.

I will only have like, maybe a small unit of SM with my Astra Mili. Combined arms for sure though

So, updated points for 9th edition are out, at least to certain reviewers.

It seems mostly ok for me, save a few points. Lias Issodon got booted over to legends for no apparent reason, which is really odd since he's the only forge world character to have moved. I'm not thrill about the changes to CSM points, but that's mostly because I'd just barely managed to get a khorne army of 8 squads of 8 berzearkers squeezed into a 2000 point list, so it's going to involve some painful cuts trying to rewrite the list.

On the plus side, the Tau'nar got a significant price cut, to the point you might actually be able to field one now, though mostly in large scale games, it's still roughly twice the cost of a knight.

Apparently the Youtuber Arch Warhammer is starting an e-mail campaign focused on Games Workshop after GW decided to dabble into political speech on their social media accounts like many other companies in the wake of the George Floyd Riots. He's targeting Games Workshop specifically it seems because their "Warhammer Belongs to Everyone" message specifically excluded anyone that disagreed with politics of the ongoing protests/riots.

Given that GW very specifically does not want to get tangled up in Arch's political crap, I seriously doubt this will work with him at the helm.

Is it just me or do other people here as well find Astartes much cooler than Custodes? I mean for ten millenia Astartes have stood at the frontline of keeping the Imperium and mankind safe, where as the Custodians just guard the Emperor's decaying body as if that would take the entirety of the 10000 Custodes.

And generally Astartes look much cooler, the transition procedure is cooler, their culture of soldier monks with single purpose is cooler. And of course Astartes sounds much cooler as well.

While the Custodians did more than just guard the body of the Emperor, it's true that their description makes them look wasted.

The problem with Custodes vs marines is that marines are posthuman super soldiers crafted by the emperor himself and armed with the finest weapons the imperium can provide. And then you have the custodes and they're all "we're just like that, but even more so". They don't really have a narrative niche of their own. Worse, chaos marines exist, so marines have the whole "fight against an evil version of yourself" thing going on, while custodes just sound like bullies when they fight CSM. Custodes and marines are also on the same side (mostly....RIP Brazen Drakes), so you also don't get the cool Soldier style "heroes must fight against a better version of themselves" narrative either. At best we get the custodes distrusting all marines because some marines have turned traitor, which is not exactly the best narrative hook GW could have come up with.

It also doesn't help that the marines have a more involved history with the setting wider exposure. Yes, GW is trying to retcon that by going "wait wait no, custodes have totally left the palace and gone off to do cool stuff", but that's not a lot to go on and it has a uphill battle vs where marines already here.

And also, marines have much more varity. Different chapters, different suits of armor, different weapons, different styles, etc. Just with primaris, you have 3 differant looks, the plain looking intercessor style (AKA the easy to customize ones), the somewhat excessively tactical vanguard marines, and the new bladeguard style guys that echo a lot more of the classic marine look. Custodes have one style. One and a half if you count the people who get 3D printed fabstodes.

It is kind of odd. In Rome you obviously had the Praetorian Guard but they were recruited from veteran Legionaires instead of their own elite in house unit seperate from everyone else.

Perhaps a better Imperial analogue could be the Imperial German Bodyguard in that the were decidedly not Roman and thus had no loyalty except to the Emperor and were widely seen as reliable and trustworthy (in strong part because they werent attached to the Roman military as it were) as well as hjghly capable. Course they were disbanded after Nero's death because they were seen as too loyal to the recently deceased Emperor.

Shouldn't be a problem with the God Emperor though. His persistant vegetable state has prevented any succession crisis. 😁
