I thought it’s mostly depicted they were running from bad economies NOT extremely corrupt and crime-ridden nations who have organized crime in control of many things
Acknowledging crime exists in such magnitudes in a “protected minority” depicts the latter in a not-so-nice-manner
Same with shooting criminals of said “protected minority” in order to prevent them from hurting the way nicer and innocent parts of said “protected minority”
It’d be as racist as cops busting a Muslim family’s home in order to stop the dad from raping and abusing his daughters right before giving them psychiatric help and protection

The surprising part is the method they employed to do so. Literally somehow starting off a campaign of scaring off people from watching a movie with journalists and mass media distorting the facts of a real world tragedy to do so... If that doesn't disturb someone then they are not paying attention.
