TSR Games is Back

The studio behind the original Dungeons & Dragons has returned to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, under the guidance of Gary Gygax Jr. with the help of Wonderfilled, Inc.

Lake Geneva, WI, June 15, 2021 --(PR.com)-- Tactical Studies Rules (TSR) was founded in 1973 by E. Gary Gygax and Don Kaye. Originally formed in 2020, TSR Games is officially back and under the leadership of E. Gary Gygax Jr.

TSR was behind the original Dungeons & Dragons first released in 1974, now a worldwide phenomenon owned by Hasbro on its fifth and most popular edition yet. The team includes Justin LaNasa (CEO), Ernest G. Gygax Jr (EVP), Jeff R. Leason (COO, and Stephen E. Dinehart (CCO). LaNasa is a visionary and entrepreneur that has set out to reunite brands like TSR with the original talent behind them.

I think it won't be much different from what it already was, except that with a TSR brand instead of the Wizards of the Coast one.

So having done a bit of looking, it seems their first product, GiantLands, is in preorder now. Details are a bit sparse but I've heard it's a classless percentile system. The cover certainly harkens back to DnD days with a scantily clad wench in a loincloth, a muscley dude who looks like Rambo, something like an Egyptian/plague doctor technopriest, and a rogue catfolk about to engage a big blue dragon-cow. It has a distinct sci-fi twist however as the characters seem to be carrying advanced firearms or some kind of energy staves rather than bows and swords.

Not straight DnD (That would have Hasbro on them faster than you can say lawsuit) but similar in inspiration. The loincloth girl and Rambo-guy suggests to me that they're not going woke, at least not enough to make all women ugly and a quarter ton while all guys are pale, scrawny, and have man-buns.

You mean they are an independent studio, not a Hasbro company like I thought it was? This changes things. A lot.

It's always possible there's a company behind the company so I can't be certain but it looks like they're indie. The TSR copyright expired and they filed on it before Hasbro did which wouldn't be needed if Hasbro was just revamping a copyright they already owned.

Well the press release mentions the company Wonderfilled but from going from Wonderfilled's press releases, they almost seem to have the exact same people in both companies.

So if that is the company behind the company, I wouldn't expect too many surprises.

I'm honestly not sure what the heck is going on. Clownfish had a couple of videos on the matter, but they don't get into what started this or the why:



The second one though, GenCon has preemptively banned the new TSR from being allowed to come.

So yeah, this entire thing is a confusing mess, but it looks like it's about TSR deciding to focus on retro style RPGs rather than more modern ones and mainly focusing their marketing on the older crowd of tabletop gamers whom are seen as... less politically correct?
