Which is exactly what you see in many of those areas.

Buddhist/Hindu-inspired/catering-too centers for nu-age hippie converts, and actual east Asian monks who have similar views at some of them, tend not to be very 'conservative' places, more 'Free Tibet' and Himalayan climbing/prayer flags-type places.

Look up a map of county by county red vs blue political control, then compare/overlap it with places with ski resorts, national park/national monument entrances nearby, and you will see a rather heavy correlation to blue pockets in otherwise red areas.
