Left Wing and Right Wing are terms that originated in the French National Assembly and French revolution. The left was the republican anti monarchist faction which was apparently on the left side of the assembly(from the view of the presider of the assembly) and the aristocrats and monarchists on his right side.

Today the terms have become broadened-though that does not lessen their value.

Yeah I've heard compelling statements in regards to the beginnings of the modern left and right wing having its origins in the French Revolution... for the lack of a better moment in history perhaps. And while the idea of Republicans on one side and Monarchists on the other might be outmoded today... it'd be interesting to see how it evolved.

In the 1920's after all a lot of parties in Post-War Europe and beyond were considered either left or right wing and some of this is likely due to the Russian Revolution which itself was in part inspired by the earlier French one. Like maybe in the 1920's maybe leaning towards the left generally meant embracing workers rights and power, and leaning to the right generally meant adopting some sort of national sentiment and the more extreme forms of it would lead to revolutions that are dramatically different in origin and ideology and result but still might have some crossover together, such as centralizing power in the state for their ideological purpose.
