Now that a death toll's emerged and is climbing I could see Biden having to stick around and say something after all, but there's already been other canceled or delayed conferences/pressers today as noted in this very thread (to say nothing of how many times that's happened since August 15). Wouldn't surprise me if the Resident in Chief (or his handlers) ended up deciding 'meh, what's one more, easier to duck this fuckup than to even try to explain it' either.
No, there's no way the rest of the Administration/Democrats would let him do it...
The optics of such an act would be suicidal to the point they would all but garuntee a Republican sweep in 2022 and 2024.
Unless the Dems are secretly confident they can stuff/rig the ballot box again.
They stole one election to get this dumbass-in-chief in, why wouldn't they steal more elections to protect him?

His 2024 chances were probably already screwed with covid and the ineffective indefinite quarantine, so his handlers probably wouldn't show any hesitation to throw him under the bus if they though they could get alternative benefits for doing so. Specifically, they'd want the Afghanistan withdrawal to be as much of a publicized disaster as possible, with easy comparisons to Saigon, in an attempt to justify more nation-building intervention. Wait for Taliban atrocities, publicize them, then demand we waste a few more trillion dollars, lives of american soldiers and civil rights discarded 'for the duration of the emergency' to stop them.
But not against Pelosi or Schumer, who effectively control the DNC, and this the real power in the Dems.
They will throw Biden under the bus, but the hydra has more than one head, and we have no way to get rid of Pelosi before 2022, and I do not know when Schumer is next up for reelection.

Exactly this. All the blame is on Biden only, there is no mention of all the other people who fucked up. There is barely a mention of the other senior Biden picks and allies who took part in setting up the disaster. Biden was always just a foot on the door only. They don't care if he gets impeached or dies in office. His only objective was taking Orange Man out and that was it.

This, tbh. By now it looks as though the fallout of this disaster is inescapable, so the entirety of the administration & deep state are looking to offload all blame for it onto Biden's shoulders to save themselves - it's not like anyone, even the most delusional 'Vote Blue No Matter Who' NPCs, really expected him to go for a second term anyway. Certainly it's not just Harris who is avoiding the worst of the heat by letting it incinerate her nominal boss instead; how about those 489 latter-day Varros, Caepios and Olympiuses disgracing the uniform who don't seem to have a single God-damn thing to say now that the cretin they endorsed has unquestionably blundered the United States into a vastly worse defeat (with room for worsening even further!) than anything they could possibly blame on Trump?
By no means is Biden free of responsibility in this mess of course (as he says without meaning it, the buck stops with him as POTUS), but between how he's barely in control of his nap schedule & bodily functions and how it's pretty much an open secret that he's just the empty suit for his handlers to work through, a hell of a lot of other heads deserve to roll for this calamity.
