We have a new Conservative leader and by extension, Leader of the Opposition - Pierre Poilievre. It's not a surprise that he won, but it is a surprise that he completely and utterly dominated the first ballot with 68% (even most optimistic Poilievre supporters were expecting a victory in the mid-50s at best) while his nearest rival, literal Quebec Liberal Jean Charest, couldn't crack 20%. His victory speech can be viewed live here.

What does this mean? Good news for the Tories overall, Poilievre is not a Liberal in blue like his predecessors and has made his name as an 'attack dog' for the Conservative Party for almost 20 years (in addition to spending several years as a minister in Harper's cabinet toward the end of the latter's majority). He's a harsh critic of the Bank of Canada, the carbon tax and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as well. Finally, man's very social media savvy. That he could stomp his rivals so decisively on the first ballot also indicates that the Conservative Party is firmly unified behind him - the last two leadership elections went multiple rounds (speaking of which, he'll have hopefully learned from the example of his predecessors and know better than to 'moderate', that is sell out, to try to win the general election when that will in fact accomplish nothing but burn his campaign down).

Hopefully this guy will be the one to finally end Trudeau's reign of terror, because God knows nobody else has a realistic chance at it or (in the case of the NDP's Jagmeet Singh) will even try.

Quite an amazing showing, if I say so myself. Pierre has been handling media criticism perfectly, and considering there's not even a mainstream Fox News equivalent in Canada, he's been handling the battering and attack angles as if he knew they were coming.

One example from recent history is when the media basically asked why he shook hands with Jeremy MacKenzie, who is the guy behind Diagolon, the "meme" country, which the Trudeau government treated as if they were some militia type group. Instead of disavowing or whatever, he went on the attack and said (I'm paraphrasing) "I shake hands with lots of people, even those I disagree with. Do you guys ask Trudeau to disavow the racists and other scumbags he shakes hands with or pays $500,000 from taxpayer money?"

There's a lot of energy, and a lot of government sponsored seething from the Canadian media (The Toronto Star is basically reeeeeeeeeeeeing). I hope it works out.

Weren't the Conservatives basically in an alliance with the Soacialists and Liberals or whatever? Why is this such a great thing?
The Liberals and NDP (our socialist party) are in a formal alliance which will likely keep Trudeau in office until 2025. The Conservatives have never formed a coalition with either, and for their part the NDP has also categorically ruled out ever allying with the Conservatives.

This is a great development because it's a sign that said Tories are shifting firmly back to the right and repudiating the failed 'moderate to the center (by trashing your own base and becoming Liberals with blue ties)' strategy that was attempted by the previous leader, Erin O'Toole, and to a lesser extent by the only marginally more successful Andrew Scheer before him. Poilievre's huge margin of victory demonstrates that an overwhelming rejection of the 'moderate' candidate preferred by the Liberals and socialists, Jean Charest, and 'moderating' tactics by a party that's now unified in wanting to fight; his speech (in which he also unmistakably mentioned rejecting wokeness) also signaled that he's going to try to win the next election on the merits of conservatism rather than by pivoting to the center.

Which is for the best really, nobody on the left would buy Pierre Poilievre trying to rebrand himself as a Red Tory (this used to mean pro-British Empire economic interventionists, but nowadays think our equivalent to Jeb or Murkowski-level RINOs) after 20 years as a major figure on the party's right and it would just piss the Blue Tories (actual conservatives) off for no actual benefit, just like what happened with O'Toole. Even our saner MSM outlets (the ones that didn't call him a dangerous fascist for criticizing the Bank of Canada and talking with 'deplorable' citizens) concede there's no realistic expectation of Poilievre toning himself down and proving to be a spineless squish in the mold of O'Toole.
