Hard to imagine this occurred less then seven years ago.

They must've depleted a lot of their modern vehicles and munitions during the Russian Civil War and subsequent Invasion of the West.

If Russia never invaded Europe and the United States in 2016, do you think Russia would've had more success in Ukraine in 2022? Seems to be the only rational explanation for their performance in this still ongoing Special Military Operation.

The fact that Russia invaded Ukraine at all still suprises me to this day. I thought the irredentist factions had died with the ultranationalist party. Sure there are still plenty of Zakhaev hardliners, but I thought those had been cracked down on since Vorshevsky wanted to distance himself from Makarov's terrorist spree.

Sure there are still plenty of Zakhaev hardliners, but I thought those had been cracked down on since Vorshevsky wanted to distance himself from Makarov's terrorist spree.

Yeah unfortunately a moderate hardliner Ultranationalist is still a hardline Ultranationalist. I don't have any solid theories myself on the politics of the situation but I can only assume that he wanted to shore up the Nationalist base since that is his support and he was assuming the West wouldn't risk the peace that was earned after the Third World War over Ukraine of all places.

OOC: Double Blind What If, iirc it means you propose a what if scenario and roleplay as if you were living in an alternate history. At least that's what AH.com tells me

The ultranationalists never put much faith in Russian hardware either if most combat footage is to be believed, they mostly used foreign imports such as G36s, TAR-21s, and even FAMAS rifles.
