The Steam Deck

I find it bizarre that someone who refuses to use Steam would prefer Windows over Linux.
I've considered switching over to Linux, but the main reason I haven't though is because of compatibility issues; as well as the fact that the developers went woke some years back, and have openly voiced support for the terrorist group Black Lives Matter. Besides; to be fair, it sounds like you'd also run into issues with this device trying to replace SteamOS with Linux.

SteamOS is built on Linux, specifically the Arch distro, and has the KDE Plasma desktop running in the background. You probably don't even need to "replace" SteamOS, just disable the Steam frontend from the startup.

Hopefully that's the case, and it doesn't end up gimping the system somehow.

I don't like that the dock is coming later and will be sold seperately, but I have to admit that the top end one of these is tempting, though I agree 1TB storage is what it should have.
I don't think he's saying that they should sell it for the same price as the one with 512GB of internal storage; just that the top end should have 1TB.
Yeah that's what I mean. If I buy this I'm going for the 512 GB model, and I would have splurged up to $700-$800 if it meant getting a full 1 TB. I feel like that should be the standard for a game system in 2021.
The Stesmdeck uses a m.2 2230 slot for the HD. As far as I can tell, 1 TB cards for them only became a thing last year, and are prohibitively expensive for this.

It's impressive in action; but looking at its dimensions measurements, the Steam Deck is even larger that I thought it was. I would not call something this big "portable".

Some months ago, GPD made a statement about the Steam Deck that was recently translated. It's... interesting, to put it mildly.

In it, GPD promotes piracy, insists that the Steam Deck is less powerful than their own products and that Valve will never let you install Windows on it, and uses "capitalist" as a derogatory term. Honestly, when combined with their abysmal history regarding customer service and quality control, reading this does not make me hopeful for the future of GPD as a company; which is sad, because I really like my GPD Win 2.

Anyways; that aside, reviews for the Steam Deck have been coming out, and it seems to have been well worth the wait. Pretty much the only thing I can think of to complain about it is the fact that it's way too big, in my opinion at least. No way would I want to lug that thing around with me everywhere I go, like I do with my GPD Win 2.

Promoting piracy seems to have gotten lashback even from their own users, but piracy is far more common in China than it is in the US or Europe, so this is unsurprising.

The Steam Deck being less powerful is probably partially true, but the Steam Deck is aiming to provide a reasonably affordably portable experience. If you're a 4K 60 FPS or it looks like shit beta male the Steam Deck wasn't gonna make you happy regardless.

Of course Valve will let people install windows, this is confirmed. Its not like you can actually stop it anyway, people have probably put windows on consoles.

Using "capitalist" derogatorily is hilarious when Chinese companies are absolutely profit motivated.

Why you would expect GDP to provide good customer service and quality control for the American market is beyond me.

Gabe Newell personally hand delivered some of the first Steam Decks as well it seems.

Very sweet of him. :p

Plenty of lol's as well.

Valve actually released Windows graphics drivers for the Deck, meaning you can actually install Windows and run games. The experience is subpar, to say the least.

Games have significantly lower performance (and the Deck's compatibility layer in SteamOS actually seems to fix Elden Ring's infamously broken performance on PC). And some portability features are lost, like the sleep mode that doesn't crash your games. But there are some advantages over other handheld Windows PCs, like the built in touchpad working with the Windows mouse.

Yeah, that was to be expected.

The odds of it running Windows 10 or 11 well was always negligible, and anyone that bought it to run Windows was kinda foolish.
