Yes that's right... finally a thread to discuss something we should all have strong opinions about... Spacebattles.

Personally, I feel that there is a shocking dearth of Spacebattles and has been since... forever. Oftentimes, perhaps for budget... perhaps not... even in space opera settings, truly great and cinematic space battles are often mucked up by intersplicing scenes of interpersonal character drama (otherwise known as stern looking face shots, thanks nBSG), teddy bears running amongst the trees, focusing on only one ship, or otherwise ruining what could be great space based equivalent of an epic war scene with some super lame plot device or other lame exposition.

What do you think makes a Space Battle great? What scenes do you think could've made great Space battles but were ruined or simply fell short for one reason or another?

And of course what is your favorite Spacebattle besides the one in Return of the Jedi?

And if so, why is said spacebattle so good that it can still be considered second best to the Battle of Endor?

Love that cut.

Honestly, while I will always love the battle of Endor, it isn't even the best battle scene in the Star Wars series. The Scarif battle scene from Rogue One was better.

Yeah. I loved the Battle of Scarif. I'm not sure if it was a better space battle then Endor but it did have a benefit of not being interspersed with annoying Ewoks mucking everything up. But if there was some sort of Top Five list... those two spacebattles might honestly be taking the first and second spot.

The Union/Krill vs Kaylons from The Orville was a very suprisingly well done battle seen, my hats off to Seth.

I'll be honest, seeing that link genuinely surprised me. It was a pretty good space battle in a TV series I seriously wasn't ever expecting to have something on that level even occur. Definitely kudos to Seth. The Orville is definitely something he seems passionate about. Thanks for sharing.

My personal favorite spacebattle is a more recent addition to the genre, the Battle of Thoth Station from Season 2 of The Expanse:

Edit: Better, more concise video found.

With Babylon 5 and Deep Space 9 on television at roughly the same time it definitely was a good time for spacebattles on television. Even Space: Above and Beyond got in on the action for a bit during the mid-90's as well. Good times! Babylon 5 battles were just absolutely beautiful when they were released, its a pity they aged a fair bit and you can't see all of that CGI goodness in high resolution now. When they came out they were top notch space battle scenes.

Speaking of Babylon 5...

Hard to believe the climatic battle of the Shadow-Vorlon War was only two minutes, thirty seconds long of onscreen time. So far ahead of the game for its time. I agree that period was a great time for space battles on television with B5 and DS9 at the same time as well. But yes.... definitely needs a 1080p treatment.

The Battle of Scarif was brilliantly done, but when you consider the relative technology for creating the Battle of Endor, as well as the potential layered into it, even if it wasn't all committed to film, it was truly a masterpiece.

Blast from the past... one of the greatest dogfights in Science Fiction history...

From that one season of Space: Above and Beyond, way back in 1996 before Fox cancelled it. Had a lot of epic vibes at the time if you were watching the show of course so some of that might of been missed here. But still seems suitably epic to me.
