The One Stop Football Thread (NFL,CFL,CFB)

I figured since late August and the NFL and CFB football seasons are about to start, that we need to have a thread to discuss all the comings and goings on the gridiron.

In the NFL, the New England Patriots look to continue their dynasty and defend their Super Bowl championship. However, they need to watch out for new threats in the AFC from KC, Indianapolis, and potentially a resurgent and young Cleveland Browns team.

In the NFC, the LA Rams look to build on a season that was while successful, came up just short of the championship. But Sean McVay and Jared Goff must watch out for the Seahawks in their own division as well as the Saints, Eagles, and Bears.

On the college side of things, we have two teams that appear separated from rest in Clemson and Alabama. Is the National Championship truly just a two team race or will some other team emerge?

What are you guys’ thoughts?

PS: Inb4 snarky European comment about soccer being the true football.

I don't think there are any teams more hated in the US than the Patriots and Alabama, although I suppose Clemson is getting up there due to their increasing championship wins.

Sadly, I don't expect UCF to reach the highs it hit in the last two years, just due to attrition.

Also, it's weird that we're getting two college football games a week before the rest of the schools get their games.

Well, it's a year ending in a number, therefore the Cardinals are going to suck. My prediction? First regular season game, Kyler Murray is taken out with a career ending injury after our offensive line again proves to be on the payroll of the other team, and we manage to lose every game.

On-again off-again football watcher. But I gotta say I would like to see the Patriots stomped so hard as to not make it into the playoffs at all--as unlikely as that probably is.

Count myself as a Seahawks fan for life, but I worry they're returning to old-form of 'only maybe make the playoffs and then burn-out harder than a jet engine'. 'My' team's depressingly predictable like that, sometimes. Occasionally they rally halfway through, but usually it's too late by then. Suppose I can just cross my fingers and hope for good things from the start rather than needing a mid-season rally/readjustment.
Would kind of like to see a good showing from the Chiefs. As a casual fan, their success last year looked like it came out of nowhere, and I always have a soft-spot for resurgence stories like that...Kind of have to love those kinds of stories as a Seahawk, otherwise you might just go nuts.

Andrew Luck is retiring:

It's super out of nowhere, but I can't blame him, since the most I remember of his years with the Colts is him being injured.

I wonder what is going to happen to the Colts. Luck was their franchise.

Also leave it to Indianapolis to waste the career of another premier QB

I always feel a little odd, living in New England but not being from around here, as if I'm walking through a minefield when it comes to football. Because of course here football is directly equivalent to the New England Patriots.

For anyone who is interested, there is a PAC12 college game on between the CU Buffaloes and the Air Force Academy. It's in the 4th, 23-10 Air Force over CU. It's on the PAC12 Network, only place I can find it.

Edit: CU has come back and tied it, looks to be going into OT momentarily.

Final edit: Well Air Force scored a touchdown shortly after OT started, and locked the game away with some good D. Final score is 30-23 Air Force in OT.

Man, I hate the fact that the ACC is shoving tons of games onto its own network that you have pay extra to get.

On the plus side, I have an excuse for missing games where FSU loses due to its defense not sorting its shit out.

It was really annoying when I was living in the Midwest and couldn’t get the Pac12 network to watch my Huskies. I really hope that we get a streaming service like Netflix for college games. I’d probably pay the price if it was reasonable.

Oh boy, I can't wait for another losing FSU season, thanks to their inconsistency on offense and defense between games.

Well seems the Broncos are going to get whalloped by the Bears. They really killed their game with a ton of penalties, and then an interception at the 2 yard line.

Edit: Emanual Sanders just got a touchdown with less than a minute left. They may go for two, to try to win, but are likely to go for the extra point and the tie to force it into over time. Never mind, they're going for two.

Next Edit: Shit, delay of game on the two point. Force to go for the extra point and tie do to timing foul up with refs. Extra point missed, but Bears were off-sides. Now they are going for two points again. Holy crap this is tense.

3nd Edit: We got the two point conversion on a Flaco/Sanders pass. Broncos now up by one with 31 secs to go.

Final Edit: Tense last series, a crap personal foul call, Bears have 12 men on field and it gets flagged, looking for yardage for field goal but clock is at 0:00, time-out called at 0:01 secs in another bullshit call, one last play for a field goal, which goes through. Bears wins due to ref BS.

I think you mean "Bears pull off amazing litteral last second victory". If you want to complain about only winning because of ref calls, I recall a certain missed field goal that should have screwed you over that you got a do over on.

Yesterday was crazy. Looks like Brees is out for at least six weeks. Roethlisberger is out for the year with an elbow injury.

Well the Broncos just shutout the Titans. This was the first game I'd been to in two years, but it felt good to see it happen like this.

My wife is from Cleveland and I'm from Washington State. Tonight we Very Deliberately didn't watch any football until it was over. She was still upset and wants to let everyone know that she doesn't like the owner of Pilot/Flying J Truck Stops (this may be a bowdlerized version of what she said).

At least the Browns game ended more justly and less painfully than the Saints-Seahawks game last week. Even from the winning side I felt bad about that one when the clincher was a missed field-goal. This was at least a bit less dramatic and the result of a couple different mistakes and interceptions. Hell, Cleveland looked to be on the road to kicking the crap out of Seattle in the first quarter...And I don't think that's a phrase I would've guessed using at all because the Browns are not exactly who I think of when pinpointing really dangerous teams (based off of a only very loose acquaintance with football teams in general so...my assessment could well be all-wet there).

The Browns were amazing during the second half of last season. Then Haslam in his infinite wisdom decided he wanted to replace the acting head coach. And he did. Oh did he ever...

I actually had fun watching the Browns with my wife last year. That was nice while it lasted.

I just feel bad for the Saints. And for New Orleans in general. Visiting the city for tourism gives you the impression they deserve more.
