During an interview Willem DeFoe randomly disclosed how he fantasizes about the concept of portraying a "Joker" character in the Todd Phillips universe, likely as a rival or imitator riffing off of the original Joaquin Phoenix Joker and being a source of conflict in the movie.

Some people say it's not needed and it's been rumored for a while, but there is an update.

It's literally nothing more than a post on Todd Phillips, the Director, Instagram page. It appears to be a script for the film that he and a co-writer, Scott Silver, have been working on. Scott Silver also helped write the original Joker.

I guess having the same people work on both is a decent sgin. I honestly just don't think Joker needs a second movie. I still have concerns about what kind of plot line they can come up with becasue a second use of the Fight Club stlye visions is not going to work.

But I also thought the new Top Gun would be dumb and it was surprisingly good. So even if it is easier to reboot an action movie maybe Joker 2 will surprise me too.

Todd Phillips, the Director of the first and now this sequel, released the first on-set photo of the sequel on his Instagram, supposedly from 'Day 1' of filming.

Also apparently Lady Gaga has been cast in some sort of role in this film as well. Which, I'll be honest, I think the sparing times I've seen her onscreen, she seems like a pretty decent actress so not a red flag for me.

I don't get why people who like The Batman hate Joker so much, I mean they might as well be set in the same universe - both dark, gritty reimaginings of the characters, both realistic and grounded. I don't get it. Make it make sense.

I didn't know that was a thing. I liked them both.

Joker is a fair bit more iconic and impactful I feel though.

Same. Maybe it's just the one guy who follows me on twitter plus his followers, but he always goes on and on about how Pattinson is his Batman and usually spams Battinson gifs accompanied by some cringe inspirational quote lol, and always shits on the Joker. There are a looot of people on twitter shitting on Joker.

I wonder if the Joker shitting is just reactionary. I feel like similar things occurred with Nolanverse/Bale Batman compared to Burton/Keaton and the three different Spider-Man when all were pretty good.

To like one means cutting down the other.

Pattinson was a really good Batman. I loved his portrayal of him and that this Batman is the most Detective we've seen him.

And now that you bring it up, on a hotness scale... Yeah I'd say Pattinson Batman wins that category. I'd gif him lol.

I think it’s reactionary and initially spawned off of the establishment’s narrative against it.

Which I think in turn comes from how Joker handled things. Look at other movies- Parasite or the Dark Knight Rises. Both of them involve social upheaval of some sort. Both end with the status quo more or less restored and vindicated by the narrative.

Joker…doesn’t. And I think that scares the establishment when combined with how many people found some resonance with that version of the Joker.

That...actually makes a LOOOT of sense. I remember the fearmongering about "incel violence" just before/up to its release. Weren't Russia and the U.S. - the two foremost nuclear powers - sabre-rattling against each other around that time too? Like, you have two of the largest nuclear powers sabre-rattling against each other... and you're fucking flipping out about incels. Like... WHAT

I would agree about Joker being more impactful. It is not because of tone or sets both really did a good job with taking Ndw York and making it Gotham. Joker just had a much tigher script. While I liked Batman everything after the Riddler got caught made the flim drag and Catwomen was just mainly uneeded.

Joker one the other hand kept out uneeded plotlines that Hollywood loves to add. It also managed to keep you guessing what we was imagining and what was real. Many movies try to do this but fail hard.

Also the ending of Joke with the crowd carrying him off and leaving the end ambiguous was nice to see. To many shows have a need to explain everything and audiences have started to expect that.

In regards to Dark Knight Rises a lot of people (me included) were bummed when it turned out the main villains weren't even particularly ideological and it all turned out to be a personal vendetta and revenge thing. The movie tried to play it off as more impactful then it was, "the slow knife that cuts the deepest" etc but generally speaking the ideological villains tend to be more memorable then the ones motivated by personal animus, especially in a story like that.

It also suffered because the personal betrayal wasn't particularly shocking or surprising but that's besides the point.

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight both had good ideological setups for their villainy and the reveal of Henri Ducard being Ras al Ghul was a small reveal with little bearing on the story in itself but still a nice one that had a good throwback to earlier in the movie. The Dark Knight Rises did all that but it all deflated like a woopee cushion towards the end, though I liked the epicness of the big ol' unrealistic brawl at the end.
