PC Gaming The Epic Game Store

Eh, I was glad when they seemed to help bring David Cage's games to PC but they're on Steam now so whatever.

Epic Games released their 2020 Year in Review post. Unsurprisingly everything is up for them. 700 million in sales. 471 games on the platform. 160 million users. And what helped with the numbers was probably the 103 games they gave out for free in 2020.

I haven't played anything on Epic yet though I have an account loaded with several dozen games... All of which I got for "free."

Total sales don't matter.

Third party sales is what matters. Epics third party sales was a measly $265 million. Meaning the rest of the difference between the 700 million and 265 million was Fortnite sales.

Meaning Epic is pretty much still just a launcher for Fortnite.

Steams 2017 yearly game sales was $4.3 billion. Just PUBG in 2017 earned $600,000,000.

PUBG in 2017 made almost as much as all of Epic did this year.

Epic Store's anemic third party sales despite Epic's massive developer bribery program is a dramatic consumer rejection of the narrative Epic's been trying to spin. The market is very much declaring, "No, we don't want to have your shitty launcher shoved down our throats. You're not even remotely competitive."

I think its more of a "We don't trust a shady Chinese software on our machines"

Meh, I just don't see that Chinese Spyware is all that different from Google's Spyware, Apple's Spyware, Sony's Spyware, and [Company I'm not aware of]'s Spyware. Might as well get a few free games out of being spied on as I'm not going to be avoiding being spied on in this day and age.

Yeah I think the China thing is more of a meme and PR at the moment. I mean calling them China's Epic Games is inherently funny even if only 10% accurate. Plus ya know... Fuck the CCP in general... I'd like Epic Game more if they were Communist free.

But I don't think the CCP is literally draining Epic Games of their user data.

More Epic Games exclusives in the pipeline!

Twenty one exclusives to be released in the coming year, down from the supposed 200 or so titles released exclusively on Epic Games in the past two years. Most of these exclusives (they are listed in the article) seem to be of the timed exclusive variety, typically one year, like Chivalry 2 for example.

Some, like Darkest Dungeon 2, are only exclusive for the early access period. And some are being exclusively published by Epic Games, while others are shared between Ubisoft's service and Epic Games, such as Far Cry 6 and a Prince of Persia remake.

There's even an Epic Games exclusive DLC for the upcoming Vampire: The Masquerade game which sounds like epic fail.

Are you talking about VtM: Swansong?

If so, that's not a DLC for Bloodlines 2, that's an entirely separate game (and also being made by Nacon, so its probably going to be mediocre).

In any case, none of these are games I'd ever actually buy, minus Swansong, which I can easily wait for because, again, Nacon.

Yeah I dunno, I was just reading off of the PC Gamer list which had this mentioned...

So might be an oopsie on the magazines part.

No, its an oopsie on your part. Bloodlines 2 is part of the same franchise, so they probably just wanted to reassure people that only the Swansong game was going to be an Epic Exclusive.

Also, I'm kinda surprised Paradox Studios (who owns the Vampire the Masquerade franchise) is allowing them to do studio exclusivity deals. Paradox has always had the practice of making their games available on all platforms after all.

The Kingdom Hearts games are getting PC ports, but will be exclusive to EGS.

Hope that the ports are actually good. Final Fantasy is Square's biggest franchise, and yet they give the FF games awful PC ports. I can't imagine KH being treated better. It's really sad when you get a better gameplay experience playing on an emulator over playing the official PC port.

If FFXVI is an EGS store exclusive, I will be very bummed.

We'll have to wait at least a year for the PS5 exclusive contract to be up, and then if there is another year long EGS exclusive contract... then that means that it might take 2 years after PS5 release for it to be available on Steam.

2 years of trying to dodge spoilers.
