I'll just go boring old man and share an anecdote, I wanted to run a hot dog stand (I wound up going into lab work instead) and researched it extensively when I was young.

To operate a hot dog stand in New York? Around a million dollars a year in expected taxes, fees, and fines unless you have the right connections. Yeah. New York is that tax happy. So this isn't actually any surprise to me. It's humorous that the "Good Old Boy" network is claimed as a thing in the Deep South but it's really, deeply, entrenched in places like New York where if you aren't plugged into the system at a high level and paying your dues to the right politician's campaign funds, you ain't running any business roun' 'ere.

The Good ol' Boys club is a universal outcropping of people's tendency to prefer people they know for recommendations and delegation. Everyone does it, its just a case of what form it takes. NYC is a (relatively) old and very big city so the club has to be the right size and prestigious to match.

@Airedale260 @gral @stevep @DarthOne Folks on PredictIt think outgoing NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio (D) might run for the NY St Executive Mansion in 2022.

Hochul is going to crush whoever challenges her.

I do appreciate the heads-up, though I’m from the other end of NJ (I have friends who live in NYC which is why I follow what goes on, as well as the occasional idiocy that creeps across the state line). Not that Murphy is any better…the only thing Mr. “If you’re concerned about taxes, we’re probably not your state” has over Cuomo is that he at least keeps his hands to himself…

DeBlasio is cartoonishly bad at his job. While I don’t doubt he’s looking to run, the problem is that, as incompetent as he was in NYC (a reliably Democrat bastion), I strongly doubt he’s going to get much traction with either the elders of the party OR the activists (as he’s pretty much managed to piss both groups off).

Hochul wins full 4-year term in 2022 very easily & she'll win again in 2026 & maybe 2030.
