A recent study suggests that smoking marijuana might cause more harm to the lungs than smoking tobacco.

The Canadian study was published in mid-November in the peer-reviewed journal Radiology.
The research looked at CT examinations that were taken between October 2005 and July 2020 at The Ottawa Hospital and its affiliate hospitals to investigate the effects of smoking marijuana on the lungs.

The researchers grouped chest CT examinations according to marijuana smokers, tobacco-only smokers, and nonsmokers.

The “study suggests that distinct radiologic findings in the lung may be seen in marijuana smokers, including higher rates of paraseptal emphysema and airway inflammatory changes … when compared with nonsmoker control patients and those who only smoke tobacco,” said the authors.

Higher Rates of Emphysema

The study found higher rates of emphysema among marijuana smokers (42 out of 56, 75 percent) than nonsmokers (three out of 57, five percent). Emphysema is a serious lung disease, caused in most cases by smoking damage leading to shortness of breath.

Emphysema was found to be more common among the marijuana smokers (28 out of 30, 93 percent) who were 50 and older than the tobacco-only smokers (22 out of 33, 67 percent ) in the age-matched groups. The tobacco smokers were older, so the researchers created age-matched subgroups.

The researchers included tobacco-smokers 50 and older who smoked one pack a day for 25 years at a minimum. For the marijuana smokers the average quantity they smoked was 0.065 ounces (1.85 grams) per day. However, less than half of this group specified the amount they used.
A subtype of emphysema, called paraseptal emphysema, which affects the outermost parts of the lung, was found to be more common among marijuana smokers than tobacco-only smokers regardless of their age, the study said.

Higher Rates of Airway Inflammation

Markers of airway inflammation were found to be higher in the marijuana smokers group versus nonsmokers and tobacco-only smokers.

For marijuana smokers compared to nonsmokers the rates of airway inflammation were: bronchial thickening (64 percent versus 11 percent), bronchiectasis (23 percent versus four percent), and mucoid impaction (46 percent versus two percent).

Bronchiectasis is a condition where the lung airways become widened, leading to a build-up of mucus that may make the lungs vulnerable to infection.

Mucoid impaction is a condition where the airways become filled with mucous.

For marijuana smokers versus tobacco smokers, the rates of airway inflammation were: bronchial thickening (64 percent versus 42 percent), bronchiectasis (23 percent versus six percent), and mucoid impaction (46 percent versus 15 percent).

Analysis of the age-matched subgroups showed an even more significant difference between the rates of bronchial thickening (83 percent versus 42 percent), bronchiectasis (33 percent versus six percent), and mucoid impaction (67 percent versus 15 percent) in marijuana smokers compared to the tobacco-smokers.

The researchers also looked at non-lung-related parameters one of which was Gynecomastia, a condition that causes enlarged breast tissue in boys and men.

They found it to be significantly more common among marijuana smokers (13 out of 34, 38 percent) than in nonsmokers (five out of 32, 16 percent).

The researchers noted that the small sample size in the study limited their ability to draw strong conclusions.

They also noted that most of the marijuana smokers also smoked tobacco (50 out of 56) and said that the participants’ other health conditions were not accounted for.
The study comes as more states are legalizing the drug.

“There’s a public perception that marijuana is safer than tobacco, and this study raises concern this may not be true,” said study author Giselle Revah, assistant professor in the department of radiology at the University of Ottawa in Ontario, according to CNN.

Lots of stuff to be aware of if you're thinking that Weed is safer that smokin' cigarettes. Especially if you think it's completely safe.

Rather an important tidbit right there about the mutual tobacco and marijuana use, not to mention that they didn't even take into account other health conditions. Given the numbers (50 out of 56, or over 89%) there is no way to empirically conclude that smoking marijuana is in any way worse for your health than tobacco.

The results of the study effectively say: "Doing Bad Thing A and Bad Thing B together is worse for your health than only doing Bad Thing B".

In summary, without having a control group composed exclusively of marijuana smokers who do not also smoke tobacco, the comparison is empirically useless, which the researchers fully acknowledge in their report.

You're absolutely right. They admitted as much in the study.

This post is to make sure that people are aware of the risks b/c I can't even count the number of times I've been told, "Weed is completely healthy man."

Oh god the weed freaks go on and on about how frying their brains, lungs and/or digestive tracts is totally not at all addictive they can quit whenever they want and the smokers about how their lungs get healthier because X compound magically erases any damage from all the other combustion products...

Yeah, usually Marijuana was consumed in the form of tea or thrown into a big bonfire where lots of people would get a high during various rituals and get rogrthers.

INB4 smokeless heated ganja, like they do rn with tobacco.

We're pretty sure that my mother-in-law's ranch hand died because she vaped. No secondary issues, no vax...passed away in her sleep. Family didn't want to pay for an autopsy so we'll never really know.

We're suspicious of the vapes b/c we know she mostly bought them from disreputable sources...and who knows wth was in them. Probably fentanyl.

There's a guy who has been living with us for a year now who smokes Marijuana regularly (he has serious issues with his spine that will eventually cripple him, and cause him immense pain), whom we're fairly certain became delusionally paranoid as a result. He's accused me of doing and saying things that are impossible; like loudly playing a guitar late at night to keep him from sleeping, without my insomniac mother noticing.

China is actually the primary producer of this crap, but I doubt there is fentanyl in them, but heating up a random concoction of flavored chemicals in a disposable 3-4$ aluminum tube with a heating element and some plastic is not something I'd consider a healthy pastime, the brats around here love them, though, and I think some even come with CBD mixed in.

Heated tobacco is probably safer because of the extra oversight, so maybe the cannabis industry should go that route, although I have no idea how healthy or pleasant ganja will be after being heated up.

I wouldn't surprised if the only safe ways to consume nicotine or THC is via a patch or time-release capsule.

Luckily, there are these things called edibles, and things called vaporizers/nebulizers, and ever more intricate bong set ups to filter most of the particulates out.

Also, would love to see where the funding for this study came from, and how much came from the same people who pushed the Reefer Madness BS ages ago.

No shit. I knew that 30 plus years ago when I saw people I know coughing like they were about to die after smoking weed. Seeing that made me swear it off for life. I have never ever smoked any weed because of what I saw.

at the end of the day the prohibition on weed and the black market around it did a lot more damage to society then letting the potheads die. It created a militarized police force, hurt our civil liberties, cost litterally billions of dollars and greatly damaged society and in return?

Potheads still smoked pot.

Their going to do drugs anyways and its better for society to have it in the open where we can watch it, tax it and regulate it then give even more money to the cartels and mafia.

You can legalize every drug and the Cartels and Mafia aren't gonna go no where. Shoot the Mafia has done more damage after Prohibition was repealed than before it. Because to make up the lost revenue they clawed into a ton of more things than they were in during Prohibition. And the Cartels make more money off Human Trafficing and gun running anyway.

No; apparently it's from damage his father did to him by beating him when he was young. The doctors have said that it's a miracle he didn't become paralyzed decades ago, but it's only a matter of time.
Well, damn. :( Poor bastard.

My paternal family has a strong history of Ankylosing Spondylitis -- my father has it, as does one of my aunts. I'm showing strong signs of it, and while it's not a fatal disease, it will severely impact my quality of life as I get older (I'm 34 now).

Basically, alongside nerve pains and arthritis in all my joints, my vertebrae are going to slowly fuse and crumble over time.

To hear that someone who should've had a healthy spine have the same sort of issues because of his cunt of a father... yeah, he has my empathy. :(

Mine too; too bad the guy has convinced himself, in his possibly marijuana-induced paranoia, that I'm out to get him. He even barged into a conversation I was having with my parents, about former Cleveland Browns running back Jim Brown, and started yelling at me. Apparently, he instead heard me badmouthing him to them and insisting that they kick him out. My mother tried taking him aside, calming him down, and explaining to him I said nothing of the sort, but he hasn't spoken one word to me since and that was weeks ago. What he has done though is various passive aggressive things behind my back; like mixing dirty laundry with my clean laundry.
